A short story within the Upside Down, a possible event that could happen if the world completely releases itself to the will of the government.
In CommComm, Saunders starts telling a story using a narrator. the narrator in this story lives with his dead mother and father ghosts. the mom and dad who do not know that they are dead were killed by robbers in their home. the narrator thinks that he would be killed if he was home that night, lucky for him he was out in a date. at work the narrator has another problem which is the closing of the center he works in. finding a job was hard for all the workers, Rimney his coworker promises the narrator a job if he helps him hide the bodies that Rimney unearthed and hid in the office. the story changes toward the end, it is about the narrator and his coworker who lies in a journey as ghosts.
The villagers of a small town gather together in the square on June 27, a beautiful day, for the town lottery. In other towns, the lottery takes longer, but there are only 300 people in this village, so the lottery takes only two hours. Village children, who have just finished school for the summer, run around collecting stones. They put the stones in their pockets and make a pile in the square. Men gather next, followed by the women. Parents call their children over, and families stand together.
The story describes a fictional small town which observes an annual ritual known as "the lottery", which results in the killing of one individual in the town.
