Evangelia sat on the soft couch next to Charles, laughing as her arm linked to his. They were taking a break from dancing when Bailey walked up to her with a smile.
"May I borrow Eva for a moment?" Bailey asked Charles.
The man nodded, unlinking his arm and putting a hand on Eva's back.
"Of course," he said.
The two women formally walked out of the ballroom, but stopped the act once they were outside.
"We have to leave now." Bailey had panic in her eyes.
"Why?" Eva asked. "I thought we had until tomorrow. I haven't even had a chance to say goodbye to Charles."
"I know, I know. But Alex just called and he said that the time machine has been fixed. However, it's only temporary. If we don't leave now, we might never come back to our era."
Eva looked at her friend in worry. She turned to face the building and peeked into the doorway to see her 1950s British boyfriend still sitting and taking a sip of his drink.
She felt her heart ache. How could she leave him now? She hasn't even told him how she truly feels, let alone her farewell message.
And that was when she came to a decision. A hard one, but she was ready. She knew she was.
Eva turned to Bailey, and smiled. "You go."
"What's that supposed to mean?"
She held her hands and gave her a longing look. "I can't leave Charles. I…he's the one."
"What are you talking about?" Bailey's voice grew louder.
"I love him, Bailey. I've never felt this much for someone not from our era."
"But--"
"I want to live the rest of my life with him. Even if it means I'll be a hundred years old once I meet our generation."
"No, Eva, you can't do this to me. To us, your friends. You'll also alter the past! Please!"
"I'm aware of the consequences, Bailey, and trust me it's a bit scary for me as well; but I've made my decision. I'm happy here. The happiest I've ever been. Tell Alex I said goodbye." Eva gently pressed a palm against her friend's cheek. "I love you. I'll remember all of you. Thank you for everything."
"Eva, no, please…" Bailey tried to grasp her hand, but she had already gone inside. A tear left her eye as she stared at the building. "No…"
Feeling defeated, she went to the field where Alex was waiting inside the machine. Once he saw her, he was immediately bewildered.
"Bailey, where's Eva?"
She didn't answer. She closed the door and turned on the engine.
"Bailey, where's Eva?" Alex asked once more, yet didn't receive any utterance from his friend. He kept asking her the same question, each time his voice gradually getting louder until he was yelling at her.
Bailey stayed quiet, until Alex pushed her against the wall and demanded an answer.
"She didn't want to leave, okay?" Bailey shouted at him.
"What?"
Bailey's voice lowered, extreme sadness in her eyes. "She wanted to stay with Charles, said she loves him and wants to spend the rest of her life with him."
Alex backed away from her, his expression becoming more bewildered by the second. "No…we can't leave her. She doesn't belong here!"
"You don't think I know that?" She yelled in anger, and then it was a fight for the loudest voice.
"Then why didn't you stop her?"
"I did! But we have to respect her decision." The yelling stopped. "Look, I hate the idea of leaving her here, I really do, but if she wants to live her life with Charles then so be it. We can't do anything."
"To hell we can't. I'm coming to get her." Alex walked towards the metal door.
"Don't. Let'sjust go." Before Alex could open the door, Bailey had already pushed the buttn that'll bring them back to the 21st Century.
"No!" That was Alex's last word before they had disappeared in time.
Meanwhile, Eva had her hand held by Charles', their bodies pressed against each other's and their arms wrapped around the other's body. They swayed to the calming tune of Doris Day's When I Fall In Love, looking at each other longingly from time to time.
