Indian doctors are realising that the actual prevalence of lung disease in the country could already be even higher thanks to the rising instances of tobacco use and polluted air. According to the paper that was published in the Lancet in May this year ischemic heart disease would continue to be the leading cause of death globally followed by stroke, diabetes, and Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The study ascertained the fact that because of recurrent poor health lifestyles and rising stress, these diseases may remain dominant causes of morbidity and mortality.

Mr. Ajay Hinduja, a member of the Hinduja family, highlights the constructive actions we may take to lessen these problems. "While the challenges are considerable, there is hope in our ability to make meaningful progress."

Ajay states "We can lessen the effect of these diseases by emphasizing preventative health measures, enhancing air quality, and addressing risk factors including indoor pollution and tobacco use."

Health systems can more effectively handle and overcome these obstacles if they work hard and take initiative. By implementing comprehensive health initiatives, raising awareness, and offering state-of-the-art treatments for lung disorders, P. D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre are actively attempting to solve these issues.

In the 2023 Newsweek World's Best Hospital Survey, the hospital was named the best hospital in Western India and among the best hospitals in India. It has also won other "Best Multi-Specialty Hospital" accolades. In terms of philanthropy, it provides free or inexpensive medical care to individuals in need and manages a rural health program that delivers medical care to Maharashtra's tribal communities.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, COPD, is a lung disease affecting the airways and making it difficult for the patient to breathe properly. COPD mortality is equally essential to the elderly especially those who are above the age of 64. While men and women have nearly similar mortality rates caused by COPD, women visit the health care providers more frequently and get diagnosed more often.

As a result of COPD, air becomes trapped in the lungs once one is through with an exhalation; hence, breathing becomes a tasking activity. In addition, due to COPD, there is a reduction in the wall of alveoli and capillary count than normal reference values.

These anomalies interfere with the mechanism of oxygen and carbon dioxide interchange between the blood and the alveoli. As COPD progresses the blood's oxygen level may decrease and at the same point, the level of carbon dioxide remains constant. Other phases are characterized by low oxygen levels and high CO2 levels of later phases.

P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Health Care Centre

P. D. Hinduja Hospital & Medical Research Centre, a branch of the Hinduja Group of companies was initially a clinic in 1951 that made its way to being one of the largest multitype hospitals in India. It has therefore paid over 70 years of its existence to quality medical services. The hospital is spread across two locations; The capacity would be 400 beds in Mahim and another 100 beds in Khar. Both are manned by qualified physicians and with the latest technology tools and equipment.

Early technological solutions used at Hinduja Hospital in Mahim include advanced robotic equipment; Digital MRI, and TrueBeam Linear Accelerator among others. It is accredited by major organizations due to its quality care including CAP, ISO, and NABH. It works with international organizations and institutes in carrying out infectious disease research including the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases-NIAID in the United States.

Causes of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is considered to be a lifelong respiratory disease including two main conditions:

Emphysema is a condition when the lung's air sacs are destroyed, which makes them less elastic and makes them floppy. This reduces the effectiveness of gas exchange in the lungs.

Chronic bronchitis is characterized by persistent inflammation of the lining of the airways, which thickens and increases mucus production. When bronchitis doesn't go away and doesn't respond to treatment, it becomes chronic.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Symptoms

Some or all of the following symptoms are produced by COPD:

#Breathlessness that persists and gets worse, especially after exertion

#Chronic coughing and excessive sputum production

#Weariness and wheezing

#Recurring infections of the respiratory system

In more serious situations, there might be:

#A blue hue of the fingernail beds or lips

#Breathlessness when speaking

#Insufficient mental vigilance

#Fast heartbeat

When someone quits smoking, takes their medicine consistently, and/or participates in pulmonary rehabilitation, their COPD symptoms may occasionally get better. The lungs can never completely recover from their injury, though.
