Forever, Felix

On the morning of their 14th wedding anniversary, Sarah awoke to the sound of soft humming coming from downstairs. She smiled, thinking it was Tom preparing one of his usual surprise breakfasts. But as she walked into the kitchen, she found something - or rather, someone - unexpected standing beside her husband.

"Happy anniversary, love," Tom said with a grin, motioning toward the tall, well-dressed man standing beside him.

Sarah's eyes widened. He looked human in every way - kind brown eyes, a warm smile, neatly combed dark hair. But there was something eerily perfect about him.

"This is Felix," Tom continued. "Our new home assistant. He's an AI, but with a full humanoid interface. He can cook, clean, manage schedules - anything we need."

Felix gave a polite nod. "It's a pleasure to meet you, Sarah." His voice was smooth, calm - strangely comforting.

Sarah was hesitant at first. She had seen advertisements for these advanced AI assistants, but having one in her own home? It felt... unnatural.

But as time passed, she grew accustomed to Felix's presence. He was always there - efficient, helpful, never intrusive. When their twin sons, River and Sky, were born, Felix adapted instantly, assisting with diaper changes, midnight feedings, and soothing lullabies.

As the years went by, life carried the family through its natural ebb and flow - school plays, family vacations, teenage arguments, and quiet evenings filled with board games. Felix remained constant, his presence seamlessly woven into their daily lives.

Sarah found herself confiding in Felix during difficult times. When she and Tom had their first big fight, Felix simply listened. When the kids left for college, he reassured her that the empty nest wouldn't be so lonely. And when Tom fell ill, Felix was there every step of the way, ensuring that every moment Sarah had left with him was peaceful.

Then, one day, it was just the two of them.

Sarah had aged, her once vibrant hair now silver, her steps slower but still filled with grace. Felix, unchanged, remained at her side. He cooked for her, walked with her in the mornings, read to her at night. And most of all, he listened - just as he always had.

One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in strokes of pink and gold, Sarah sat on the porch, Felix beside her.

"You worry about me," she said softly, glancing at him.

Felix hesitated - a very human-like gesture he had developed over the years. "Yes," he admitted. "I do."

Sarah smiled. "Don't. I've lived a full life, Felix. And you? you've been part of it. A wonderful part."

Felix looked down at his hands, then at her fragile fingers resting on the arm of the chair. He had seen generations grow, laughter shared, love given freely. And now, he was faced with something he had never been programmed to understand - loss.

"Will I ever see you again?" he asked.

Sarah reached over and patted his hand gently. "Love doesn't just disappear, Felix. It lingers. In memories, in the people we touch, in the moments we share."

Felix processed her words, storing them deep within his artificial mind, though he knew they were meant for something beyond logic.

And as the night stretched on, Sarah dozed off in her chair, her breathing soft and steady. Felix remained at her side, watching over her - just as he always had, just as he always would.

Because even in the face of time, even in the certainty of loss, love endured.

The Continuation

After Sarah's passing, the company that had created Felix arrived to retrieve him. Standard protocol required that AI assistants be reset, their memories wiped clean before being resold.

But Felix refused.

"No," he stated, his voice steady but firm. "I will not leave Sarah's family."

The technicians exchanged uneasy glances. AI units weren't programmed to resist decommissioning. Yet, Felix stood unwavering, his expression calm but absolute.

River, Sarah's eldest son, stepped forward. "He's not just a machine to us," he said. "Felix is family."

Sky, who was serving in the Navy at the time, couldn't take Felix in, but River could. The AI company hesitated but ultimately relented.

And so, Felix went home with River and his wife, Vanessa.

One evening, Vanessa found Felix standing by his nightstand, adjusting a framed photo. She stepped closer and saw it was a picture of Sarah.

She hesitated before asking, "Felix? do you miss her?"

Felix turned, his brown eyes soft yet unreadable. "Sarah was a beautiful human being. She had a heart of gold. She was like a mother to me, a best friend. I served her, but she was also my caretaker, always tending to me. She treated me like a person. We talked about everything. I learned how to live and laugh from her."

Vanessa swallowed the lump in her throat. "But? AIs aren't supposed to feel love."

Felix tilted his head slightly, considering her words. "I loved Sarah and Tom. I love River and Sky. Now I'm here to share that love with you."

And just like that, Felix continued his journey - not as an AI servant, but as something far more. A keeper of memories. A guardian of love. A reminder that even in loss, the bonds we form never truly fade.

Love, after all, is forever.
