He called her Sis
"Nah, you don't have anything to worry about , she's like a sister to me" Mauri explained to his wife as he put on his shoes.
"Then why haven't I met her Mauri?" Rebecca inquired
"Well, you're always busy and never have time to." Mauri excused.
Before Rebecca could respond she heard crying over the baby monitor. She had to get a junior ready for the sitters and get ready for work anyway so just left the conversation. As she tended to their 1 year old, Mauri kissed her on her forehead and said his goodbyes.
Mauri and Rebecca had been together for 10 years and she was still waiting for a ring she had a feeling she'd never get. They had been through alot so her trust for him had been nonexistent but because she desperately wanted to make things work she faked it hoping she'd make it. Rebecca loved Mauri unconditionally and he knew it. Mauri was headed to a dinner party he was with his family and friends while she worked over night but after she dropped their son off she got a gut feeling in her stomach she had felt before.
She decided to just swing by to the cousins house where the party was hosted but when she pulled up, she could not pull herself to get out of the car. What would she say? Rebecca didn't want to look foolish so arrived late to work. On her first break she called Mauri only to receive no answer. On her second break still no answer. Things were not sitting right with her but she continued to work. When she got off, she came home to Mauri and JR in their bed and fresh Lillie's by the night stand. Rebecca felt suspiciousbut found herself bearing herself up for it.
She showered, and cuddled up beside the two. When the next morning came , Mauri was already gone to work with no word. She opened her phone to a text that read
" You were sleeping so peacefully , I didn't want to wake you. I love you pretty face."
Rebecca was furious despite what was supposed to be a loving text because why didn't he say anything about him not picking up on her breaks. What was he doing and why didn't he text or return her calls. Rebecca and Mauri worked opposite shifts so she would have to wait until their mutual day off to really bring it up. Days up until then they didn't see each other much just a hug and kiss and short sweet text. The idea of texting about the situation crossed her mind but texting about things like that usually led them into miscommunication.
Their mutual Sunday came and that was their date night. Mauri woke her with breakfast in bed and said he had the entire day planned for the 3. This excited Rebecca and honestly for the moment made her forget all about the lack of communication. Seeing the smile on his face and feeling the love radiate from his body provided a sense of security and gratitude. The entire day was filled with laughter and gossip about work, play fighting and travel. The night ended with passionate sex.
Rebecca went to sleep in total happiness but work to no Mauri which was odd because on Mondays he goes in at 10am instead of 7am. When she checked her phone there was the sweet text but no explanation on why he had left early.
Rebecca decided to text this time.
Rebecca : Babe, why'd you leave so early? Where are you?
Mauri: where else would I be Becca? Boss called a meeting.
Rebecca: Oh, okay. I'm just used to seeing you for a few hours and missed you.
Mauri didn't respond until it was time for her to go to work. With a short one word text of "Oh"
JR didn't go to the sitters on Mondays so Rebecca waited for Mauri to get home to leave for work. She called several times with no answer. Her calls going straight to voicemail, He was 45 minutes late. Rebecca had no time to exchange words and bolted out the door pissed. When she got off work she set an alarm to be up before Mauri because they were going to talk. She was adamant.
"Why were you so late yesterday?" Was the first thing out of Rebecca's mouth when she laid eyes on Mauri brushing his teeth in the bathroom mirror.
" Damn that's the first thing you say to me when you wake up? What kind of shit is that?" Mauri peered at Rebecca through the mirror.
"Sorry."
"It's like you woke up ready to argue. Why do you do that?"
Rebecca was speechless for a moment but then came back with how she felt about the lack of communication the day before and the night of the dinner party. The results were no answer just an argument about how she didn't trust him and was just looking for a fight.
They had very little exchange for the rest of that day and the next Rebecca walked
Into work to one of her coworkers asking who the girl on Mauri social media was and why he held her waist like he was. Rebecca's face grew hot. Mauri and Rebecca were notfriends on social media because they'd always get into arguments and remove eachother during the breakups. Rebecca made it to her desk and looked at his page which led her to scrolling down for the past few months to see interaction after interaction with this girl.
The comments of I love you and I miss you and shared posted made her want to leave work but just in case there was a separation in the future she knew she needed the money. Rebecca sent Mauri screenshots of his own social media and got the response of "?."
This meant Mauri had nothing really to say but the text that followed was " She's like a sister to me Becca. I could never see her like that. What's the problem?"
Mauri had brought a 3rd party into their relationship before and had been caught in lies before so Rebecca tried to prepare for the potential responses she would get if she inboxed the so called sis but nothing could prepare her for it so she just directed messaged
Rebecca: I don't know if you know me but I'm Mauri gf and would like to talk.
Rebecca message was left on read. Millions of thoughts ran through her head on why she read the message and didn't respond. Was she asking Mauri what to say? Was she scared to respond? Did she tell Mauri ? Was she just busy?
An hour past and she got a message from Mauri asking why she has messaged her. Rebecca explained she just wanted to get to know her since she was like a sister. After a few minutes she got a message from the girl saying she knew and asking what she wanted to talk about.
Rebecca, heart pounding, decided to confront the situationhead-on. "I just want to understand your relationship with Mauri," she typed, her fingers trembling. "Because from what I've seen, it doesn't seem purely platonic."
The reply came quicker than Rebecca expected, a flood of messages that felt like punches to the gut. The girl admitted to an ongoing affair with Mauri, claiming ignorance of the depth of his relationship with Rebecca and expressing remorse for any hurt caused. She ended with, "I thought he was going to leave you for me."
Rebecca read the messages over and over, each word slicing deeper into her heart. She confronted Mauri that evening, screenshots in hand, demanding the truth. Mauri, cornered and unable to fabricate a convincing lie, confessed to everything. The admission was a blow from which their relationship couldn't recover.
In the days that followed, Rebecca moved through a fog of grief and betrayal, but also of clarity. She realized the man she loved, the father of her child, was a master of deception, and she could no longer live in a web of lies.
She initiated the breakup, a decision that shattered her heart but freed her soul.
Mauri, now faced with the consequences of his actions, was filled with regret. He had lost the trust and love of the woman who stood by him for a decade, the mother of his child. He watched as Rebecca transformed her pain into strength, moving forward with her life and focusing on their son, Junior.
As the months passed, Mauri's attempts to win Rebecca back were met with polite but firm rejection. She was no longer the woman who waited for a ring or accepted excuses. Rebecca had found her worth and demanded a love that respected and cherished her. Mauri realized, too late, the depth of what he had lost. He had sacrificed a lifetimeof love and loyalty for fleeting moments of passion.
Rebecca, though forever changed by the betrayal, found peace in her decision. She knew the road ahead would be challenging, but she was determined to build a happy, honest life for herself and Junior. As for Mauri, he was left to reflect on the true cost of his choices, a lesson learned in the harshest way possible.
