Invaded
On any ordinary day on Monday morning, you suspect to do the following: wake up, get ready, eat, go to work/ school, come back, have dinner, and start the whole routine all over again; but today was different. I had woken up over-hearing my mom.
Mom: “Hello?”
Mom: “Oh hi Mrs. Springsteen, How a-“
Mom: “Slow down, Slow down. Take a br-“
Mom: “What why’s scho-“
Mom: “What's happening?”
Mom: “You can't talk anymore? You ha-“
Mom: “Wait?!”
Mom: “Hello? Mrs. Springteen?”
My mom came into the room to tell me the news. It was not satisfying to hear.
Mom: “Hey Jack, there’s no school. I just had a strange call with your principal. She sounded as if she was in trouble and was trying to leave quickly. I and your father are gonna go to your school and see what's going on. We’ll be back in a few, Love you. Breakfast is on the counter”
Jack: “Thanks ma, love you too. Be careful”
Right after the conversation I got ready and ate some breakfast. I looked at the time and it’s been at least half an hour since my parents left. I went into my room to call my buddy Eli and ask if he had heard the news about school.
*KSHHHHHHH*
The phone was dead, static on the other line, which was odd since static noises only happen on landline phones; not smartphones. Another strange thing is that no one was outside, no birds were flying or chirping, no mailman passed and no children were outside playing on their day off from school, and cars looked like they were dead and rusted. It’s been an hour since my parents left. I went downstairs to check if they were back; Either of them was back. It only takes about 10 minutes to get to my school and back, they should’ve had already been here. I went outside to see if they were pulling up. As with the other things that were strangely gone, my parents were as well. I can’t call since my phone is acting weird, and I just decide to head to the school myself to see what's going on.
*BZZZ BZZZ BZZZ*
Jack: “Hello?”
Eli: “Jack, is this you?”
Jack: “Wait? ELI?! Have you heard the news, there’s no school”
Eli: “Wait?! Wh-“
Jack: “And no one is outside, It looks like I’m in the apocalypse, my parents have been gone for almost an hour and a half. I’m gonna go to the school right now t-“
Eli: “JACK!! NO!! SHUTUP!! DO NOT GO TO THE SCHOOL!”
Jack: “Jeez Eli, lower your voice man. And don’t tell me to shut-“
Eli: “Jack, where have you been? Haven’t YOU heard the news? We got invaded, man. Men in hazmat suits came and knocked down everyone's door. They took Billy, I haven’t seen him since then. And….if you haven’t heard from your parents……if they hadn’t come back for you…..I’m sorry man”
Jack: *Laughs* “Dude they have been gone for like an hour- is this a prank? And Billy, where ever he went….he probably deserves it”
Eli: “Hhhhh….Jack, this is no time to mess around. Why and how would I pull this off? And Billy doesn’t deserve whatever’s gonna happen to him, and wait did you say an hour?
Jack: *drops phone*
Eli: “Jack, its been 5 years”
Jack looks over to the school and realizes the horror. Graton high school, jack’s school, looked like a haunted house you would go into at Knott’s Scary Farm, it was broken down and faded, all of the windows at the school were broken. Jack gets closer to the school to try to see if he lost his vision at that moment; but he didn’t, everything was as clear as day. He noticed a vehicle, his parents vehicle. Rusted and dirty like all the others that he saw in his neighborhood. He walked over to the car……Jack dropped to his knees and witnessed something that would haunt him till the end of the earth. His parents were both dead, their flesh was still there but their muscles and tissue seemed to be gone, it was a skeleton with just skin on it. Jack realized looking at the car his parents were shot; the car was covered in bullet holes. Jack saw that his parent's corpse had a symbol; it was a weird bird and had a circle around it. Jack drew it on his arm.
This was the first clue that he had to find who or what killed his parents. Over an hour and a half after moving his parent's bodies to a more proper burial, burying them, and saying his last goodbye. He goes back for his phone and see’s that the call he tried to reach to Eli, it had said 5 years ago. It was 2030 when he tried to call and now when he looked at the calendar on his phone, it said 2035. Jack had timed-jumped 5 years after it feeling only an hour and thirty minutes, his parents died 5 years ago and were at the same spot rotting in the car. While jack was thought processing he realized something shiny behind a bush, when he moved the bush with his arm it was a ball of light and zoomed fast away. The ball of light led him to witness people or things staring back at him. When jack blinked……they were gone. And he saw darkness permeating when they disappeared, and the next thing he knows. Jack is surrounded by a bunch of villagers, and that same strange ball of light he found earlier.
