Early in a morning alarm clock suddenly buzzed.i was astonished when it rang an hour earlier than expected. As I was going for another nap suddenly I heard some noises. I was indolent but had to go outside to see who was making noise.
I saw my grandmother taking to mother about some types of pratha. She doesn't want to involve me in this but couldn't resist.she told me about 'sati pratha' that how sati was a historical practice in Hindu communities in which widow sacrifice herself by sitting on top of her deceased husband pyre.But I didn't agree with her because there is no way a person could be immolated while alive.
After certain days passed,while I was at school they planned to show us a movie about sati system,based on true story.I was taken aback.
At the beginning of movie,there was scene where some villager were taking a widow to get immolated.She had 2 little daughter but no-one cared.But as the fire begin she couldn't tolerate it an tried to run but villager killed her brutally by throwing rock at her.At that time people were so strict about about custom and tradition either it was morally right or wrong.
As,all thing must come to an end this pratha also.There was a young beautiful lady who was married to 58 years old man .He had 2 son same to her age. She then gave birth to a son.As time passed her husband was gravely ill and on the brink of death.Her husband didn't her to be sati after his death so he requested his son to save his mother.Atlast he died.
She was in so much grief due to her husband death but that's not an end the villager took her to sacrifice with her dead husband. As fire begin she couldn't tolerate thepain and ran toward the jungle but as there was so much dark no one saw her and thought she was dead.
After some time her son finally found her and took her very far place.This tradition was continued for so many time and many women had to died bearing so much pain.
In 1920 the prime minister chandra shumsher issued a decree formally prohibiting the practice of sati.
After watching a flim I couldn't sleep at night thinking about their struggle for existence. As I struggle even with minor burn,yet that time women had to endure death by burning due to practice of sati pratha. My respect had increased toward all the women who had to sacrifice so much.
By hoping they will get the better life as they deserve in next life I went to sleep.
