Chapter 7

Alanna woke up with a start on their third morning on the ship and found herself face to face with Aimil who was already awake and watching her face keenly. He tenderly smiled at her as she blinked and her face flushed at the closeness and his gaze on her. She smiled warmly at him then closed her eyes for a moment before opening them again. The events of the previous night felt like a dream but she knew it was all real. Her dreams had been vivid and intense and she wondered if Aimil had experienced the same. "Yes I did, " Aimil answered as if he knew exactly what she was thinking. What were his dreams like? She wondered to herself. "The same as yours, I saw and felt everything that you did," he answered again as if he was reading her mind. She closed her eyes, flustered and unable to hold his gaze. He chuckled lowly and turned his body, pulling her onto his chest as he did. This time she couldn't shake off her dreams and unlike before she knew exactly why. She remembered everything, well, most of it from her guess. Everything made sense now. She'd seen the lives that they shared from before. She'd felt the love and affection that they'd shared and she'd also felt the sorrow every time they were pulled apart either by obligations, distance or death. A lone tear fell from her eye onto his chest as she played it all back in her mind. Aimil closed his eyes as he felt a wet drop seep through the shirt on his chest. He heart felt warm and full with love, and his body felt cold from the guilt that threatened to tear him apart. He didn't understand why he'd left her, why anything else had mattered enough to pull him away from her and why he'd allowed it. He could still see the pain in her tear-filled eyes, her silence haunting him. She hadn't begged or pleaded with him, she had simply accepted his choice and bid him farewell. And every time he left something horrible happened, either she would end up being murdered or he would end up being murdered. Either way he'd never find his way back to her until the next life. It was almost as if losing her was his punishment for leaving, for allowing himself to be pulled away, for letting her go. His connection to her had grown, he felt her emotions so heavily they not only felt like his own, it was as if he could touch them. He could feel her racing thoughts and when he focused, he could hear them clearly echoing in his head.

Not this time, he thought quietly to himself. This time he would stay by her side and fight for her, fight with her no matter what. Neither of them felt like leaving the cabin but they knew they had to get up. Alanna was the first to drag herself out of bed, unable to ignore her rumbling stomach. She grabbed her satchel of food from Orin and sat on her usual chair next to one of the portholes grabbing a sandwich and digging in. Aimil felt his stomach clench and he followed suit, Orin had packed him some food too. Neither of them knew how to even begin to talk about what they'd just experienced. Once they were done snacking and taking turns in the privy chamber, they prepared their baths and got busy preparing for their day. By the time they were done and out on the deck it was almost noon. They sat for a while enjoying the sun and the cool breeze before they decided to go into the galley and grab some of that delicious stew they'd had the day before. This time they met both Leomaris and Sergius at the entrance as they walked in. "Ah! Alanna! Aimil! How are you this fine day? How's your voyage?" Leomaris cheerfully greeted clasping their shoulders briefly as Sergius tipped his hat to them. "We're doing alright, the voyage has been interesting so far," Alanna answered with a grin stealing a glance at Aimil before turning back to the captain and his right hand man. "We're just on our way to get some of that delicious stew we had yesterday," she added as they walked in. "Good to see you, I hope the stew is to your liking today," Leomaris called out.

Once they'd had their stew, which was delicious by the way, they headed back onto the deck finding a spot to sit and enjoy the great weather. "So, you remember everything then?" Aimil asked, his hand reaching for Alanna's. "I'm not sure if it's everything but yes, I do remember most of it," she answered cupping his hand with both of hers. They sat in silence listening to the waves until Aimil broke the silence again, "Alanna, I must apologize. I regret having let you down all the times I did, I never should have left," he said somberly gazing into Alanna's eyes. She smiled sadly at him and nodded, gazing back out into the gleaming sea before she answered, "What's done is done. Let's just focus on what happens from now on." She didn't know how to feel, there were many emotions grappling for dominance inside her but one thing was clear, her heart still remembered and held a lot of love for Aimil. She didn't know how things would play out this time but she was done living in fear, she'd done that for more than enough of her life. They spoke for hours trading stories about their lives before they met, reminiscing on their past lives until late into the afternoon. "So what did you set out on this voyage in search for?" Aimil asked after a moment's quiet. "I wanted to find my people, people like me. I wanted to be among my people again, perhaps even find if there were any survivors who'd escaped from my home," she answered with a small smile. "What about you?" She asked. "Well," Aimil started rubbing the back of his neck as his face started to flush. "Orin sent for me a couple of days before you arrived, somehow he knew you'd be coming. He insisted that I had to help you, protect you on your journey. Now I wonder if he knew of our history. He's a seer too, you know," Aimil said sheepishly. Alanna smiled. She now wondered just how much Orin knew, he always did have a knowing look lingering on his face whenever she was around him for the short time that spent on Transivitus.

Evening came soon and both Alanna and Aimil headed back into the galley looking for Emilia and her husband. "Alanna! Over here!" Emilia called out from a table near the back of the galley motioning for Alanna and Aimil to join her and her husband. "My new friends! How are you?" She asked excitedly as they sat down. "Very well, thank you, domina mea," this time it was Aimil who answered. "How's your honeymoon?" Alanna asked as she had the day before. "Oh, it is paradise!" Emilia giggled reaching for her husband's hand with a huge grin on her face. Just then Claire's translucent form appeared beside Emilia grinning and nodding her head to Alanna with a wink. Alanna couldn't help but smile, and by the slight smile that appeared tugged on Aimil's face from the corner of her eye, he'd seen her too. "You won't believe the night we had! I saw my grandmother Claire! Well, her spirit! She came to me!" Emilia directed towards Alanna. "That was just a dream, my love," Lorence quipped. "No, it wasn't! You may have been asleep but I was wide awake!" Emilia responded with a playful gasp and a nudge to her husband's side before leaning over to Alanna. "My grandmother told me she was a Donatus! Can you believe it?" Claire whispered with excitement but this time quietly. Alanna turned to her with wide eyes feigning ignorance. "Really?!" She answered. "Yes!" Emilia nodded quickly then added, "I never knew much about her seeing as she died when my mother was young, my mother never told me much about her. And get this, she told me to talk to you about it, that you would have more information. Isn't that something?" Alanna didn't know what to say, she struggled to find the right words to respond. When she finally found her voice she leaned closer to Emilia and whispered, "Let's save that conversation for after dinner, we can go out onto the deck." Emilia nodded vigorously with a smile and leaned back as Lorence stood up and went to speak with one of the ship servers. Shortly, Lorence came back with the ship server he'd been speaking to with bowls of steaming stew and cups of water. Dinner was full of cheerful chatter, this time even Aimil and Lorence joined in. After a while, Emilia stood and grabbed Alanna's hand. "Boys, if you'll excuse us, Alanna and I have some lady business to discuss, we won't be too long. Keep each other company, will you?" She said with a sly smile, pulling Alanna out onto the deck.

"You're one too, aren't you?" Emilia whispered to Alanna as they sat on the deck. Alanna glanced at her and gave a slight nod. "Oh deary! You have nothing to fear from me. All the hate you must've faced, I can understand why it's not an easy thing to talk about," Emilia spoke quietly reassuringly rubbing Alanna's shoulder with kindness and understanding in her eyes. Alanna felt herself relax and the tension in her shoulders started to dissipate. "You saw her didn't you?" Emilia asked. "Yes, she's the first one I met aboard," Alanna smiled wistfully remembering her first meeting with Claire. "I knew it! I knew this ship was haunted!" Emilia exclaimed trying to keep her voice down. Alanna couldn't help but laugh out loud at Emilia's expression. Claire appeared beside Alanna, a warm smile on her face as she held her hand. She still couldn't believe her hand didn't just go through Alanna's, it was nice to have some human contact at last. "So did she tell you why I don't seem to have any gifts?" Emilia asked once Alanna's laughter died down. Claire spoke to Alanna telepathically this time, giving her the words she wanted to communicate to Emilia. "She says that your mother did a binding on you to hide your gifts and hers, she wanted you to have a normal life without having to worry about being hunted," Alanna relayed to Emilia. "She's here?!" Emilia exclaimed with excitement, her hands going up to her chest. Alanna nodded with a smile. Emilia had so many questions and she didn't hesitate to ask, she fired question after question and Alanna relayed Claire's answers to her every inquiry. "So how do I unbind my gifts?" Emilia asked after her riveting interrogation. "Are you sure that's something you want to do?" Alanna asked with uncertainty. Emilia nodded and paused before she spoke again, "I want to be who I am fully, I don't want to live as only half of myself. And you know, I'm in good hands, my husband is also a Donatus, he'll take good care of me as I discover this part of myself." Alanna certainly didn't expect that, Lorence did a marvelous job at blending in with the mundanes. She paused for a moment and when her hand started tingling, as if she knew just what to do, she raised it to Emilia's face, brushing a few loose strands of her blonde hair and tucking them behind her ear. Emilia gasped and brought her hand up to her chest, closing her eyes for a moment. When she opened them, they were brimming with tears but Alanna saw no sadness in them. "Thank you, Alanna," Emilia breathed, "you have no idea how much this means to me. I knew I liked you for a reason." Emilia meant every word, she felt different, more like herself than she'd ever felt, more complete than she knew she could feel. Alanna smiled warmly at her and held her hand reassuringly, she was glad to have met Emilia and even gladder that she didn't have to hide who she was from Emilia anymore. Claire giggled from behind her, tears streaming down her face as she wrapped her arms around Alanna and her granddaughter, sending chills down Emilia's spine.

"That's her, isn't it? I felt her," Emilia said bubbling with laughter as she wiped her teary eyes. Alanna only nodded with a tender smile, her heart full. She'd never done anything like that before. "Okay, up we go. I'm afraid our boys might worry that we've gone overboard if we don't go back now," Emilia said standing up and grabbing Alanna's hand to help her up. Alanna and Emilia laughed as they headed back to their table in the galley. Aimil wondered why they'd taken so much time but once they sat down and he held Alanna's hand, he understood why. He couldn't help but stare at her in awe, his beautiful goddess. He hadn't thought he could feel any more love for her or be awed any more than he already was, clearly he was wrong. Lorence on the other side of the table grasped Emilia's hand and brought his other hand up to cup her face, leaning forward and planting a loving kiss on her forehead. They seemed to be having a whole conversation with nothing but their eyes and somehow Alanna knew he knew what had just happened. He gave a grateful glance at Alanna and pulled his wife's chair closer, wrapping her in a warm embrace with a smile on his face. He loved how happy his wife was. Just at that moment, Alanna saw the translucent figure that had been hiding behind Lorence finally step out from behind him. The figure was an old man, his blue eyes filled with emotion as if he could feel what Lorence was feeling. This time, Alanna needed no introduction, she knew who he was, it came to her easily and as he looked at her with a smile he seemed to understand. He took off his beige hat and dipped his head before he put it back on and disappeared again. This time Alanna and Aimil didn't linger late into the night, they grabbed a lamp from Sergius on their way out and headed back into their cabin. The ghosts didn't seem to be as active while the passengers were out and about scattered across the hallways and Alanna was grateful for it. Once they were safely behind the locked door of their cabin, Aimil led Alanna to her bed and they curled up into each other with his arms wrapped around her and her hand and cheek on his chest, chatting until they fell fast asleep.
