Chapter 9

Alanna and Aimil were interrupted mid-conversation by a knock at the door. Aimil went to the door opening it ever so slightly to check who was on the other side. Sergius stood outside the door with a lamp, "You lot ready?" He asked. Aimil gestured to Alanna to grab her coat and her drying cloth as he did they same before locking the door behind them and trailing after Sergius. Alanna couldn't help the tingles of excitement that erupted in her chest as they arrived at the perfect spot on deck. Sergius would be back to pick them up after some minutes, in the meantime, he'd make sure no one made it to the part of the ship they were on. Aimil could barely keep his eyes off Alanna as she stripped down to her chemise and dove into the cool water. He quickly jumped in after her in his braies hoping she hadn't seen him stare, or the resulting bulge in his braies that didn't seem to go down even in the cool water, which was much cooler than the last time. Alanna transformed into her mermaid form and splashed around with her tail, still getting used to her form before she took off. This time she was faster than the last time she'd gone swimming, Aimil could hardly keep up enough to keep her in his sight. Every now and then she'd pop up behind him just like the last time, he still wasn't used to that and it made him jump every time. Alanna heard whispers calling her name and she wanted to follow them but she knew Aimil would worry so she decided to try something. She took his hand and started swimming, going deeper into the water. Somewhere along the way, Aimil's lower body had transformed into a dark colored tail that glowed blue and breathing under water was now easier with the glowing gills that decorated his sides. After a few minutes they spotted a glowing turquoise orb and swam towards it. As they stopped, four glowing beings that now looked just like them, two male and two female, appeared from the orb.

"Greetings, Dea, we've been waiting to meet you for a long time," one of the females telepathically relayed to Alanna with her head slightly tilted downward as the others followed suit, her smooth voice ringing loudly in Alanna's head. "Greetings Spirituum," Alanna answered with a slight bow of her head as well. "Do you remember us?" The other female said her webbed fingers wrapping around Alanna's arm. Suddenly there were images appearing at rapid speed behind Alanna's eyes, her memories of them rushing back. It took her a moment to regain her bearings as she nodded. The female that she now remembered as Alina smiled softly. "I see you've reunited with your maritus," she added, this time Aimil could hear her too. Alanna's face flushed while Aimil nodded straightening his posture. The four glowing beings looked between Alanna and Aimil before Alina spoke again, "We are at your service," and at this all four gave another bow. "We wanted to meet you here before we surfaced, we know about Dominos and we're here to help. We thought it fitting that we should get properly acquainted first so you would know we're on your side when we appeared," Alina explained. "There are more of us, we were just the welcome committee. Now go back, we'll have more time to catch up before your voyage is over," she added with a warm smile and a wave of her hand. Alanna smiled and with her hand over her heart, she gave a slight bow before grabbing Aimil's hand and swimming back to the surface. Alanna was overcome with emotion as they surfaced near the ship, she had more family than she'd thought. They didn't have time to process what had just happened before a glowing translucent figure appeared above them, this wasn't one of the ghosts, she was different. Her hair was a glowing silver that matched her eyes, she had a flowy white dress and matching white wings sprouting from behind her. She smiled at Alanna with a familiar kindness before her airy melodic voice echoed, "I'm Evelynn of the sylph, Mea Dea. My people are pleased to have you back. Always remember, we're with you," she said before suddenly flapping her wings and disappearing into thin air.

It took Alanna a while to find her voice as she floated in the water, her brimming eyes still glued to the spot Evelynn had been. First the water spirits and now the air spirits. Aimil, on the other hand, was fighting back the tears that threatened to well up as he felt wave after wave of the emotions flowing from Alanna. He knew how much this meant to her after having lost her family, her home, and being alone for so long. He glided towards her, wrapping his arm around her shoulders in silent comfort. Alanna had planned to swim, she hadn't expected any of this. She leaned her head on Aimil's shoulder then took his hand, "One last lap?" She asked already starting to glide around the ship. Sergius soon appeared with two lamps in his hands sensing they were done just like the night before, helping them back up onto the deck as they transformed back into their normal forms. If he was surprised his demeanor didn't show as he handed one of the lamps to Aimil and Alanna stole a glance at him wondering just how much he knew. Just as they entered into the hallways to make for their cabin Sergius tipped his hat to them headed towards the galley and the rain that had been long coming started, a cold breeze sweeping through the air.

Unlike before, this time Claire appeared first as they walked down the dark hallways and soon after several of her translucent companions followed, gathering around Alanna and Aimil floating around Alanna and Aimil protectively as they walked in a comfortable silence. It didn't take long for Domino and his minions to make an entrance as they turned the second corner. This time Alanna wasn't afraid, in fact, she was more determined to deal with Domino, refusing to live in dread for the rest of her voyage. Claire and her friends dealt with Dominos' minions while Domino floated straight towards Alanna. "Finally! The one who sets me free!" He rasped darkly. Alanna stood still with a smile, waiting for him to get to her. Domino was taken aback by her demeanor but he didn't stop, he had to have her power. Just as he raised his hand Alanna grabbed it, catching him by surprise. "Not now, not ever," she said with a low calm voice as her glamour fell away, her eyes glowing purple, the golden streaks in her curly tresses and the golden marks on her skin glowing with a blinding brightness. She flung Domino through the floor, making the floor boards rattle loudly. Domino came at her again, this time, from her right side. Just as he reached for her, a golden staff with a glowing violet orb appeared in Alanna's hand, emitting a flash of violet light, striking Domino square in the chest. Domino fell, this time hitting the floor with a thud. He was drained, he needed more energy, so he tried to siphon Aimil who was watching Alanna with wonder. Aimil didn't see the black smoky tendrils edging towards him but Alanna did and pulled him out of the way. Meanwhile, Domino's minions found themselves overwhelmed by Claire and her friends and one by one, they disappeared leaving Domino still lying on the floor screaming after them.

Alanna stepped slowly towards Domino, her calm demeanor threatening now. "You have wreaked havoc on many souls for long enough!" Her voice boomed causing the cabin doors on either side of the hallway to rattle and the rain to pour more heavily as the wind outside picked up. "Your reign of terror ends now!" She added. Just as she pointed her staff towards Domino, he pulled out a red glowing orb from behind him and pointed it towards Alanna. The red orb started to draw in Alanna's magic in golden streaks and Domino smiled maliciously. Alanna, however seemed unfazed. She closed her eyes and started to hum a haunting melody, holding her left palm up towards the orb and within seconds, her magic started flowing back towards her, effectively wiping the smile Domino was wearing off his face. Alanna didn't stop there, he hand still up, she drew the magic from the red orb in red streaks that turned golden as they reached her palm, absorbing the orb's energy until it was depleted. Domino was now on the floor, his jaw now slack in shock and just as he made a move to disappear, Alanna stretched out her staff holding him in place with an invisible force. Her left palm still up, Domino started choking as black wisps of energy poured from his mouth, drawn to Alanna's hand turning golden upon contact. His glowing red eyes seemed to widen in terror as he choked. Alanna drew his energy from him until finally he disintegrated completely into black smoke which she absorbed, alchemizing it into brilliant golden wisps as she took it in.

When she was done, the staff in her hand disappeared and the glamour that hid her identity slowly washed back over her, the bright light she emitted disappearing as her eyes fluttered closed and she swayed. Aimil caught her before her now limp body hit the wooden floor picking her up, his lamp now abandoned on the floor. He noticed the rain had now subsided, the rushing wind outside had calmed and they were surrounded by ghosts whose eyes were wide in shock as well as the beings he and Alanna had met before while they were out there sea, all wearing the same shocked expressions. Claire was the only one with a warm smile and a proud look on her pale translucent face. He didn't know how but Claire was able to pick up the lamp he'd dropped on the floor as he'd rushed to catch Alanna. He turned and with wide quick strides made his way to their cabin with Claire trailing behind him in case he needed help with Alanna.

Alanna stirred awake to the chirping of birds and streams of light. She was in her bed, curled up against Aimil with her head resting on his chest. She could tell by his breathing that he was already awake. She took a deep breath and slowly raised her head to look around, taking in her surroundings, trying to remember how she got back to the cabin but her efforts were futile. "Mea Dea," Aimil's husky voice snapped her back into the present moment drawing her gaze to him. His eyes were filled with relief as he looked her over. "I'm alright," she rasped, finding her voice, as if she knew what he was going to ask. She felt different, calm and complete. She slowly sat up and slid off the bed, walking to look out of one of the portholes in the cabin. Aimil watched her keenly, she seemed well and he was glad for it but something was different. "I need to use the privy chamber," she muttered walking towards the door and Aimil quickly followed her without saying a word. After Alanna had relieved herself, she went out onto the deck with Aimil trailing behind her and closed her eyes, breathing in deeply before she opened them again. She bent down and stared at her reflection in the water, inspecting it closely as she turned her head from side to side as Aimil watched her. She got up and turned to Aimil with a small smile in his direction and headed back to fetch water for her bath before heading back to the cabin with Aimil closely following suit.

Alanna didn't know how to explain how she felt, she just felt different. Her senses now more expanded and much sharper, her mind wasn't racing with thoughts the way it always had before, her heart thumped slow and steady. She felt much stronger, bolder than she ever had, even her posture felt much straighter than before. She remembered everything, every little detail about her, about her lives before the current one. She felt awake, full, complete, in a way she'd never experienced, like every piece of her had melded together and her sense of self was different too. She didn't just know who she was based on what she'd been told, she felt it in her bones, she embodied it fully now. She had a new sense of purpose that was missing before. Aimil on the other hand had woken up feeling different too, something had awakened inside him the previous night but he couldn't quite articulate it. He felt like a puzzle that had been incomplete inside him for so long was now complete, like he'd recovered pieces of himself he didn't even know were missing. His attention however was fully on Alanna who had been walking around as if taking in the world around her for the first time. The connection he had with her was now more heightened than before, his urge to be close to her almost overwhelming. He could feel her much clearer than before, she felt so different and so did their connection. It felt like something unspoken in their bond had snapped into place. It was now the fifth morning of their voyage across the sea but this time neither Alanna nor Aimil were counting down the days in fear of what the future held for them anymore.
