Chapter 3 Trail by Fire

Life in the Evergreen household had settled into a comfortable routine. Rowan was growing fast, and despite the occasional sleepless night, Jake and Aria were finally feeling like they had a handle on parenthood. That sense of normalcy, however, was shattered in an instant.

It was a crisp morning, the kind that promised a good day ahead. Aria was in the kitchen, humming softly as she flipped pancakes on the stovetop. The smell of butter and syrup filled the air, and she smiled, thinking about how Rowan would soon be old enough to enjoy family breakfasts. In the nursery, Rowan was on the floor, mindlessly chewing on a bottle, completely unaware of the chaos about to unfold.

In his office, Jake sat at his computer, lost in his work. He had a tight deadline to meet, and the clicking of the keyboard filled the room as he focused intently on his task.

Then, the smoke alarm blared.

Aria frowned, turning toward the oven. At first, she thought maybe something had burned, but as she turned, her heart lurched - flames were licking up the side of the kitchen wall, already spreading across the cabinets.

"Fire!" she screamed, backing away as heat surged toward her. "Jake!"

Jake ripped off his headset, his pulse spiking at the urgency in her voice. He bolted from his chair and ran toward the kitchen, only to be met with a thick cloud of smoke. The fire was growing rapidly, blocking the doorway.

"Rowan!" Aria choked out, eyes wide with terror. "He's in the nursery!"

Jake didn't hesitate. He turned on his heel and sprinted toward Rowan's room. Smoke was already creeping under the door, and when he flung it open, his stomach clenched. The crib was empty.

"Rowan?!" he shouted, his heart pounding. He scanned the room frantically. The bottle Rowan had been chewing on lay abandoned on the floor.

Then he saw it - tiny handprints on the carpet leading out into the hallway.

Jake's blood ran cold. Rowan had crawled out of the nursery. And the only place he could have gone was the living room - where the fire was spreading.

"Aria! He's in the living room!" Jake shouted as he dashed into the smoke-filled space. His eyes darted wildly through the haze, searching for any sign of their son.

Through the thick smoke, he spotted him - Rowan, sitting on the floor, just a few feet from the growing flames, curiously watching the flickering orange light.

"Rowan!" Jake lunged forward, scooping him up just as a section of burning drywall crumbled to the floor where he had been. Coughing and shielding Rowan with his body, he turned to see Aria, desperately waving him toward the back door.

"Jake, hurry! The front is blocked!"

Holding Rowan tightly, Jake bolted through the house, following Aria as embers rained down around them. Just as they reached the kitchen, another loud crack split the air - the ceiling in the living room caved in, sending sparks and smoke billowing outward.

"Move! Now!" Aria yelled, pushing Jake forward.

Jake kicked open the back door, bursting onto the porch with Rowan clutched tightly to his chest. Aria followed, coughing violently as the cool morning air hit her face. Behind them, the fire raged, the house they had built their lives in now an inferno.

Just then, the piercing wail of sirens filled the air. The Appaloosa Plains Fire Department arrived in record time, firefighters jumping out with hoses, rushing to tame the monstrous flames. Their town had a 95% reliability rate when it came to emergencies, and today, they were proving it.

One of the firefighters ran over to them. "Is everyone out? Is anyone still inside?"

Jake shook his head, still holding Rowan protectively. "No, we're all here."

Aria clutched his arm, her legs trembling. "Our home?"

The firefighter gave them a reassuring nod. "We're going to do everything we can. Just stay back."

They stood in the yard, watching as water jets battled the blaze. Neighbors had gathered, murmuring in shock and offering blankets. Mrs. Henderson, their ever-nosy neighbor, arrived in her robe, clutching a tray of what seemed to be cookies.

"Oh my word! I saw the flames from my window! Are you two alright? Rowan?" she fussed, shoving a blanket toward Aria.

"We're okay," Aria managed, wrapping the blanket around her shoulders. She looked down at Rowan, who had finally stopped crying and was now staring wide-eyed at the flashing lights.

Jake exhaled deeply, still gripping their son. "Everything we built, Aria? the house?"

She squeezed his hand, her voice firm despite the fear still lingering in her eyes. "We got out. That's what matters."

Hours passed, and finally, the fire was under control. Their home was damaged, but not completely lost. The fire chief approached, removing his helmet. "The structure is still standing, but there's a lot of interior damage. You'll need to stay somewhere else for a while."

Jake nodded, glancing toward Aria. "We'll figure it out."

She gave him a small, determined smile. "We always do."

The fire had taken so much, but as Jake looked at his wife and son, he knew that their most important possessions had made it out unscathed - their family.
