Chapter 44 A Christmas to Remember

Christmas had always been Rowan's favorite holiday, and this year was going to be the biggest celebration yet. The Evergreens were hosting a grand Christmas party, their new house perfectly decorated to showcase its massive living spaces. Aria had spent weeks making sure every garland, light, and ornament was placed just right, beaming with pride over their home's transformation. The scent of pine and freshly baked cookies filled the air, mingling with the soft hum of holiday music playing in the background.

Rowan, however, was determined to contribute in his own way. He had convinced himself that cooking a meal for the party would be a great idea - something impressive, something that would show everyone he could handle more than just scientific experiments. Unfortunately, confidence did not equate to skill.

"Rowan! The oven!" Aria's voice rang through the kitchen just as smoke began billowing from inside.

Coughing, Rowan grabbed an oven mitt and yanked open the door, revealing a charred, unrecognizable mess where his intended dish had been. He groaned, waving a towel to clear the smoke.

Oliver, who had been watching from the kitchen island, burst into laughter. "I think it's safe to say you should stick to science."

Rowan scowled playfully. "Not my finest moment, I admit. But in my defense, I was experimenting."

Aria sighed, shaking her head with a smile. "Experimenting is for the lab, sweetheart. Not my kitchen."

Despite Rowan's failed attempt at culinary greatness, the party was a resounding success. The house buzzed with warmth and excitement as guests mingled, admiring the Evergreens' stunning home and enjoying the festive atmosphere. Friends, neighbors, and even a few influential figures had been invited, filling the house with laughter and conversation.

As the guests gathered around the towering Christmas tree, presents were exchanged. Rowan sat beside Oliver, his fingers idly tapping against his knee. He loved Christmas, but something about this year felt different - bigger, almost. When Aria placed a wrapped box in his lap, he raised an eyebrow.

"This one's special," Aria said softly, her eyes shining with something he couldn't quite place.

Rowan tore off the wrapping paper, revealing a sleek black case with silver latches. His pulse quickened as he flipped it open. Inside, resting in a bed of velvet, was a custom-built digital interface tablet - far beyond anything he had seen before. The display glowed to life as he touched it, the interface personalized to his specifications, complete with advanced computing power for his research.

His breath hitched. "Mom, Dad? how did you - ?"

Jake grinned. "We had a little help."

Aria gestured toward the far side of the room, where Chantrelle Riffin, a renowned scientist, stood with a warm smile. "She made sure it had everything you'd need for your work."

Rowan looked between them, his heart pounding. "You? you talked to Chantrelle Riffin about me?"

Chantrelle stepped forward, nodding. "Of course. I've been following your projects for a while now, Rowan. Your modular energy work is promising. Very promising."

Rowan swallowed hard, struggling to find words. A scientist he admired had not only acknowledged his work but had helped craft something to push him even further.

"I don't know what to say," he murmured, looking down at the tablet with reverence. "This is? everything."

Aria squeezed his shoulder. "We knew you'd do great things, Rowan. And now, you have all the tools you need."

Oliver nudged him with a smirk. "Guess you're officially too smart for the rest of us."

Rowan laughed, his eyes still burning with emotion. "I don't think I've ever gotten a gift this perfect."

Chantrelle chuckled. "Consider it an investment in the future. I have a feeling you're just getting started."

As the Christmas party carried on, Rowan found himself deep in conversation with Chantrelle, discussing theories, technology, and the future of science. It was the kind of gift he never could have expected - the opportunity to learn from and be noticed by one of the greats.

The Evergreens' Christmas party was more than just a celebration of the season; it was the start of something new. Something bigger than Rowan had ever imagined.
