There once was a girl named Sarah. Sarah liked to be alone. She did not have to many friends. Her best friend was a broken mirror that she carried with her every where she went. Sarah had the mirror ever since she was two. Shattered into a million pieces, she refused to get rid of it.
One day, Sarah's Mother had taken her to the park. Her favorite thing to do was to play in the sandbox by herself. She would build sandcastles and mountains as tall as she could. She would show everything she built to the mirror and hug and squeeze the mirror real tight. Her broken mirror was her best friend. She never lost sight of the broken mirror, and did not like when people went touch it.
The next day, when Sarah arrived at the park, someone was already playing in the sandbox. She thought very carefully about what she would do next. The first thing she did was pull out the broken mirror. As she looked in it, and talked it over with herself, she finally decided to get in the sandbox. A few hours had passed and the boy just watched her play. When it was getting close for them to go home, he introduced himself to her. He said, "My name is Frank, what is your name?" She replied, "My name is Sarah." " Why do you keep a broken mirror with you?" "Because, it's my best friend." Looking very confused, Frank shrugged his shoulders and walked away. It was time to go home.
On the car ride her Mother asked, "Sarah, who was your new friend?" Sarah explained, " That is not my friend, he was just some dumb boy who wanted to know about my mirror." Her Mother smiled at her responseand proceeded to explain to her that maybe she should give her new friend a chance. The expression on Sarah's face said a whole lot. You could tell she was not interested in making any new friends. Her one and only friend was that mirror she adored so much.
Finally, they made it home. Sarah ate, washed up, and got ready for bed. Replaying the day, she decided that tomorrow would be better. She was sure that no one would be in the sandbox. The next morning she was eager to get to the park. But, to her surprise; Frank had already beaten her there. She asked, "What are you doing here? Why are you in my sandbox?" Frank responded, " I wanted to see you and give you this." He reached in his bag and pulled out a brand new mirror. Sarah's face lit up. All the pretty colors the mirror had on it made her want the new mirror. She said, "Take it back, although it is very pretty, I do not want it." Frank was shocked that she had refused the mirror. "How can you turn down a gift?" "I bought it for you." Sarah explained to Frank that there were to many memories with that mirror and she refused to let it go.
Frank tried and tried, day in and day out for months, and every time he tried Sarah refused. After many months, She thought about every good memory she had with the mirror, and every bad memory she had with the mirror when she went to sleep that night. After sleeping on it for months, she finally made a decision. When she and her Mother arrived at the park Sarah was excited to see Frank. She walked up to him and said, "Okay Frank, I will accept the mirror from you." Frank asked, "What changed your mind?" "Well, after playing it in my head for months now, I decided it was time to put it away." "Are you sure?" "Yes."
Sarah shared some of her experiences between her and the broken mirror with him. He just listened to her talk. She told him that she believed it was time for her to put the old memories to rest and start new ones with this mirror. Frank could not have agreed more. It is good to hold onto to memories, but it also good to make new memories along the way. Change can be a good thing if you let it.
