It started with a wrong turn. Gabriela had been driving all night, the dark highway stretching endlessly before her. When the GPS glitched and sent her down a narrow, unmarked road, she decided to trust it. Big mistake.

The road seemed to stretch forever, the trees on either side closing in like a dark tunnel. The deeper she drove, the more unnatural it felt shadows seemed to move where they shouldn't, and the air grew thick, as though the forest itself was breathing. Finally, she spotted a clearing and pulled over, hoping to reset her GPS and get her bearings.

When she stepped out of the car, silence engulfed her. No crickets, no rustling leaves, just an oppressive, hollow stillness. She glanced back at the road, only to find it gone. In its place was an endless expanse of ashen plains stretching to a distant, misty horizon. Her car, her lifeline, was the only thing familiar in this alien landscape.

Panic set in as Gabriela fumbled with her phone. No signal. She yelled, her voice swallowed by the emptiness. She ran back to her car, but the engine refused to start. Then, faintly at first, she heard it a low, mournful wail carried by an unseen wind.

Turning toward the sound, she squinted at the horizon. Shapes began to emerge from the mist, shambling forms moving with an unnatural gait. As they drew closer, Gabriela's breath caught in her throat. They weren't human at least, not anymore. Their faces were featureless, smooth as porcelain, with empty hollows where their eyes should be.

They were whispering, a dissonant chorus of voices that seemed to echo directly in her mind.

"One more... one more..."

She stumbled back, slamming against her car door. "Stay away!" she screamed, but the figures only grew closer. Desperate, she ran.

The plains seemed endless, her every step sinking slightly into the ashen ground. The whispers grew louder, more distinct. She could hear fragments now words like "lost," "forgotten," and "replace."

Gabriela tripped and fell, her hands scraping against the gritty earth. When she looked up, one of the figures was directly in front of her. Up close, she could see its featureless face wasn't smooth it was cracked, like dried clay, and from the cracks seeped a dark, tar-like substance.

"You don't belong here," it said, the whisper now a guttural voice.

"I-I didn't mean to come here!" Gabriela cried. "I just want to go home!"

The figure tilted its head. "Home... What is home?" It reached out a hand, bony and covered in the same tar-like substance. Gabriela scrambled backward, but the ground beneath her began to sink, as if the plains were trying to swallow her.

More figures emerged, circling her. The whispers became deafening. Then, a sharp, clear voice broke through the cacophony.

"Run!"

Gabriela turned to see a man standing at the edge of the circle. Unlike the others, he looked human ragged and weary, but alive. He waved frantically. "If you want to live, follow me!"

Without hesitation, Gabriela got to her feet and ran toward him. The ground beneath her seemed to resist, pulling at her feet, but she pushed on. The man grabbed her arm and pulled her into a narrow crevice that hadn't been there moments before.

The whispers faded, replaced by an eerie stillness. The man led her through a winding tunnel carved into the ash, lit by a faint, otherworldly glow.

"What is this place?" Gabriela whispered.

"The Hollow Land," he said grimly. "A liminal space a world between worlds. People who lose their way end up here."

"Can we leave?"

The man hesitated. "There's a way out, but it's not easy. You have to find the Gatekeeper, and they don't let anyone leave without a price."

Before Gabriela could respond, a distant wail echoed through the tunnel. The man's face went pale. "They've found us. We need to move. Now."

As they ran, the walls of the tunnel seemed to close in, the glowing light flickering ominously. Gabriela didn't dare look back, but she could hear them the whispers, the scraping of feet against the ground, and the sound of something wet dragging through the dirt.

Ahead, a massive iron gate loomed, covered in strange, shifting symbols. The man stopped abruptly. "This is it," he said, his voice shaking. "The Gatekeeper is beyond here. Whatever they ask of you, you must agree. It's the only way out."

Before Gabriela could ask what he meant, the ground beneath them began to crack. The figures were closing in, their hollow faces peering through the dark. With no other choice, Gabriela pushed open the gate and stepped through.

On the other side, she found herself standing in a vast, empty void. A single figure sat on a throne of bones, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light. It smiled a twisted, knowing grin.

"Welcome, traveler," the Gatekeeper said, its voice resonating like the toll of a bell. "What will you offer in exchange for your freedom?"

And in that moment, Gabriela realized the true horror of the Hollow Land.

Not everyone who entered was meant to leave.
