The Karen

Most of us have met or experienced the arrogant or snobbish stuck-up females who act like ass-holes and think the world revolves around them. They’re the women who think their shit doesn’t stink and that they’re too good to be around regular people or those who they feel are less than them. They feel entitled, and anything less than exceptional is considered an insult to them. Most of us call them a "Karen" because of their entitled or privileged attitude. If you haven’t met those kinds of women, consider yourself lucky or, as some folk say, “blessed”.

Chapter 5

I'm Right, You're Wrong

Beth gripped the steering wheel tightly, her frustration bubbling to the surface as she recalled the chaos that had unfolded at the convenience store. Beth was in disbelief and very angry at how she was treated, taking no accountability for how she reacted or for what she had done. As she made her way to the superstore for some essentials, she couldn't help but call and vent to her friend Arlene.

Beth: You won't believe what just happened to me!

Arlene listened intently, with a familiar mix of concern and exasperation brewing within her. Although she wasn't exactly surprised, she was shocked that Beth let things spiral out of control.

Arlene: Beth, you've got to learn to stay calm and keep your emotions under control.

Something she had said numerous times to Beth. But today, Beth was not in the mood for advice. She felt a wave of irritation wash over her, thinking Arlene just didn't understand.

Beth: I can't believe you're not on my side. You're supposed to be my best friend and be supportive when I need you.

Arlene: Beth, you need to take accountability for your screw-ups. If you took the time to think before you react, then you wouldn't find yourself in bad situations like that.

The conversation took a wrong turn, and in a huff, Beth ended the call. Arlene just sighed, shaking her head.

When Beth arrived at the Superstore, she was still annoyed and pissed off that the manager of the convenience store refused to pay for her items, but forgot that she had stolen food out of the store. As she walked around the superstore getting items she needed. There was a sign for 50% off on some clearance items in the housewares department. One of the items was a 15-piece set of pots and pans. Beth grabbed the box and put it in her cart. After she got the rest of her items, she went to the register to check out.

When Beth put her things on the counter, she watched as the cashier rang up her items. When the pots and pans were scanned, they had a price of $45. Immediately, Beth stopped the cashier to complain.

Beth: Wait, that set was on the shelf for 50% off.

Cashier: Yes, that's the price after the discount.

Beth: No, you are supposed to take an additional 50% off the $45!

Cashier: No, ma'am. The sign lets you know the items have already been marked down to 50% off. There's no additional percentage to be taken off of it. Do you want me to delete the item from your total?

Beth: I want 50% off like it said on the sign! You get a manager right now! This is bullshit! You can't advertise something and then not honor it! I spend too much money at this store to be disrespected and not heard! The customer is always right?..and you are supposed to give me what I want!

Intercom: I need a manager at the front checkout for a price check, please.
