"Did you hear that?" Rena whispered.
"It's the wind," Tom said quickly, but his flashlight shook in his hand.
The whisper came again, louder this time. It wasn't the wind. It was a voice - hoarse, desperate, and coming from deeper inside the mansion.
"Let's go," I said, grabbing Rena's arm. But she pulled away.
"What if someone's trapped in here?" she said.
"Or something," Tom muttered.
Despite every instinct screaming at me to leave, I found myself following Rena as she moved toward the sound. It led us to a spiral staircase that descended into darkness.
"Absolutely not," Tom said, backing away.
But Rena was already halfway down.
