Chapter 3 The Unexpected Offer

The following weekend, Jamie found herself drawn to Cedar Ridge, a trail she usually avoided because of its popularity. It was a gorgeous day, the kind that lured out both seasoned hikers and casual strollers. Despite the crowds, Jamie felt the familiar pull of the woods, a siren song she couldn't resist.

She was halfway up the trail when she noticed him. A man in his mid-forties, dressed in sleek outdoor gear that screamed "money but understated." He stood near a trail marker, consulting a map with an air of quiet confidence.

Jamie hesitated for a moment, her instincts kicking in. This guy was different - not the rugged adventurer or wandering artist she'd met before. He seemed polished, deliberate. Intriguing.

"Lost?" she asked, stepping closer.

He looked up, his sharp brown eyes meeting hers. "Not exactly. Just making sure I'm on the right path."

"Aren't we all?" she quipped, flashing her signature smile.

He chuckled, folding the map neatly. "Name's Daniel. Just moved to town. You seem like you know your way around here."

"Jamie," she replied. "And I do. I'm a local realtor."

His eyebrows lifted slightly, a spark of recognition in his gaze. "Realtor, huh? That's perfect. I've been looking for someone like you."

The way he said it made her pause, her curiosity piqued. "Really? What kind of place are you looking for?"

Daniel smiled, but it wasn't the easy, flirty grin she was used to. It was calculated, purposeful. "Not for me. For you."

An hour later, Jamie found herself sitting across from Daniel in the private lounge of a boutique hotel near the trailhead. A glass of chilled ros sat untouched in front of her as he laid out his proposition.

"I run an exclusive real estate consultancy," he began, leaning back in his chair. "We specialize in high-stakes deals for ultra-wealthy clients. Properties that aren't just homes - they're status symbols. And I've been watching your career."

Jamie blinked, her pulse quickening. "Watching my career?"

"Your sales numbers, your reputation. Even your? unconventional approach to client relations," Daniel said, his lips curling into a knowing smile.

Heat rose to Jamie's cheeks, but she held his gaze. "And what exactly do you want from me?"

"I want you to join my team," he said simply. "You've got a unique talent, Jamie. You connect with people in ways others can't. You make them feel like they're buying more than a property - they're buying a piece of themselves."

Jamie leaned back, processing. "What's the catch?"

Daniel's smile widened. "No catch. Just a shift in focus. Higher stakes, bigger commissions. And, occasionally, you might have to? entertain certain clients in ways that go beyond the usual scope of a showing."

The implication hung in the air, heavy and undeniable. Jamie's mind raced. She wasn't naive - she knew her charm and chemistry with clients played a role in her success. But this was something else entirely.

"Let me get this straight," she said, her voice steady. "You're offering me a job, but it comes with strings attached?"

"Think of it as leveraging your strengths," Daniel said, his tone smooth. "You'd be compensated handsomely, of course. And you'd have access to properties and connections you could only dream of otherwise."

Jamie sipped her wine, giving herself a moment to think. The idea was tempting - dangerously so. But it also felt like a crossroads, one she hadn't anticipated.

Finally, she met his gaze. "I'll think about it."

Daniel nodded, standing and placing his business card on the table. "Take your time. But don't take too long. Opportunities like this don't wait."

As Jamie left the hotel, the card burning in her pocket, she felt a strange mix of excitement and unease. Her life had always been about chasing thrills, walking the line between professionalism and adventure. But this? This could change everything.

For better or worse, she wasn't sure yet.
