CHAPTER 14

The sun was beginning to dip lower in the sky when Erica finally came back inside after spending the afternoon wandering around the small town. She hadn't noticed how long she'd been gone, distracted by the quiet solitude of the market and the bustling energy around her. She didn't even realize how much time had passed until she stepped through the door to find Sam nowhere in sight. It wasn't like him to just disappear without a word.

She thought about the brief conversation they'd had earlier in the kitchen, about love, about past hurts. Sam had seemed distant afterward, retreating into his usual quiet space, and she hadn't seen him since. Maybe he just wanted some time alone. She didn't mind. But still, there was a strange tug in her chest. Why does it feel like something's missing when he's not around?

The thought lingered, but she brushed it aside, deciding to head to the market for some fresh ingredients. It wasn't until she was halfway down the road that she realized she hadn't even mentioned to Sam that she was stepping out.

He won't mind, she thought, walking a little faster to avoid overthinking. I'll be back soon anyway.

It didn't take long to reach the market, where the hum of conversations, the clink of coins, and the chatter of vendors filled the air. But as she browsed the stalls, looking for fruits and vegetables, Erica began to notice a group of young men hanging around one of the market corners. Their loud, boisterous laughter cut through the otherwise pleasant atmosphere. At first, she tried to ignore them, but as she passed by, one of the men made a lewd comment.

"Hey, pretty lady, where are you going in such a rush?"

Erica stiffened, her heart picking up speed. She was used to being complimented, but there was something in his tone that made her uneasy. She kept walking, hoping they'd lose interest. But they didn't. Another man stepped in front of her, blocking her path.

"Come on, don't ignore us," he slurred, his words thick with alcohol. "You look like you could use some company."

Erica's pulse quickened. She didn't know what it was, but there was something about the way they were looking at her that made her feel small. Just keep calm. Get past them and find something else to focus on, she thought, but her feet were stuck to the ground.

Before she could take another step, she heard a low voice behind her, cutting through the noise like a knife.

"Leave her alone."

The men turned, surprised at the sudden interruption, their eyes narrowing as they took in the newcomer. Erica blinked, her breath catching as she recognized Sam standing at the entrance to the market. His eyes were cold, narrowed with a protective edge she hadn't seen before.

One of the men squinted, clearly trying to assess if Sam was a threat. "Who's this?" one of them asked, his voice still tainted with the drunken haze.

Sam stepped closer, his jaw tense. Without a word, he strode toward Erica, his hand snaking around her waist and pulling her toward him. The movement was swift and confident, like he had done it a hundred times before. His hold was warm, grounding her, but the gesture also left no room for the men to argue.

"This is my girlfriend," Sam said, his voice low but firm.

The moment the words left his mouth, the drunken group of men faltered. Recognition flickered in their eyes as they looked at Sam. They quickly glanced at each other, and for a brief moment, they hesitated, unsure of what to do. But the fear in their eyes was unmistakable. Sam was a man they didn't want to mess with. Slowly, they backed off, muttering half-hearted apologies as they stumbled away.

Erica watched them go, her heart racing for entirely different reasons now. She couldn't believe how easily Sam had stepped in, how protective he was, even though he didn't have to be. He didn't say much, but his presence spoke volumes. She had never felt so safe in that moment.

Sam didn't say anything as he turned to her, his hand still on her waist, guiding her gently through the market. The tension in the air started to ease, and they walked side by side, hands brushing against each other, until Sam's fingers found hers, intertwining them with a quiet intimacy that sent a jolt through her chest.

Erica looked at him, her lips parting slightly in surprise.

Sam glanced down at their hands, and for the first time in what felt like forever, there was a small, genuine smile on his lips. "You okay?" he asked, his voice softer now, the gruffness gone, replaced by something warmer.

Erica nodded, her chest fluttering as she squeezed his hand in return. "Yeah, I'm fine. Thanks to you."

He's my knight in shining armor, Erica thought, the realization hitting her with a rush of warmth. Sam wasn't like the men she had known in the city, the ones who were quick to show off or demand attention. No, Sam was steady, dependable, and protective in a way that made her feel like she was the most important person in the world to him. In that moment, he wasn't just a man from the countryside - he was her hero, her protector.

"Don't mention it," Sam replied, his voice a little quieter. He gave her hand a slight squeeze, his thumb brushing against her skin. The simple act sent a warmth spreading through Erica, and she felt her heart swell. There was no grand gesture, no over-the-top display of affection. Just Sam's quiet, consistent care for her, wrapped in little moments like this one.

And as they continued walking hand in hand, Erica couldn't help but fall a little harder for him, her heart quietly but surely recognizing the depth of his kindness.

As they made their way back toward Aunt Nena's house, the day seemed to settle into a calm quiet. Sam's hand still held Erica's, and though neither of them spoke, the connection between them felt stronger than ever. The walk was peaceful, the cool evening air brushing against their skin as they strolled side by side, lost in their own thoughts.

But just as they were approaching the house, a voice called out from the front porch.

"Looks like you two have had a nice walk," Aunt Nena's voice rang out, light and teasing.

Erica froze, her heart leaping into her throat. She hadn't even noticed Aunt Nena standing there, watching them. Before she could even think, her hand immediately slipped from Sam's, her cheeks flushing crimson in an instant. She scrambled for some sort of excuse, though her flustered state made it clear that she wasn't ready to have this conversation.

"I-I wasn't... we were just..." Erica stammered, her words tumbling out in a rush. She couldn't even form a coherent sentence as her embarrassment grew.

Aunt Nena smiled knowingly, her eyes twinkling with amusement. She crossed her arms, leaning against the post of the porch. "You don't need to explain, Erica," she said, her tone gentle but full of warmth. "It's good to see you two getting along."

Sam, ever the stoic one, didn't seem to mind the situation, but Erica couldn't help but feel exposed. She bit her lip and avoided looking at Aunt Nena, hoping her face wasn't as red as it felt.

Aunt Nena's smile softened, and she took a step forward, her voice light but kind. "You know, I've been waiting for this day to come," she said, looking between the two of them. "And I'm glad to see you both so... happy."

Erica blinked, her heart pounding with mixed emotions. She wasn't sure whether she was embarrassed or relieved, but Aunt Nena's understanding gaze made everything feel just a little bit easier to bear.

"Go on inside," Aunt Nena added with a wink. "I'll give you both some time to settle in. Dinner will be ready soon."

Erica nodded, still unable to look Aunt Nena in the eye for too long. She gave Sam a quick, embarrassed smile, grateful for his steady presence beside her. Together, they walked into the house, the weight of Aunt Nena's knowing smile lingering in the air between them.

AsErica stepped inside, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was the first ofmany moments like this, where she would realize just how much Sam had become apart of her life. And despite the awkwardness, she couldn't help but feelgrateful for it.

*****

The morning air was cool, with just a hint of the warmth the day would soon bring. Erica stepped outside, the soft crunch of the grass underfoot contrasting with the early stillness of the world. The sky was painted in delicate shades of lavender and pink, the first light of the sun slowly pushing through the horizon. There was a serene, almost magical quality to the world at this hour, a quiet calm that filled the air.

Sam stood by the gate, waiting for her. His posture was relaxed, hands tucked into his jacket pockets, but there was a subtle alertness in his eyes as he saw her approach. When his lips curved into a soft smile, it made Erica's heart flutter, a warmth spreading across her chest. She hadn't expected to feel this way, not after everything, but here she was, standing in front of him, waiting for something she wasn't sure she fully understood.

What is it about him? Erica thought, her eyes studying him for a moment longer than necessary. Why do I feel like I've known him forever, even when I haven't?

"You ready?" Sam asked, his voice low, rough with the quiet of the early morning.

Erica blinked, shaking herself from her thoughts, and nodded, glancing up at the sky. "Where are we going?" she asked, genuinely curious.

"The river," Sam replied simply, a glint of something familiar in his eyes. "There's a spot up in the hills I want you to see. You'll love it."

Erica raised an eyebrow, a mixture of intrigue and skepticism on her face. "You sure it's not too early for this?"

Sam's grin widened slightly, his eyes lighting up with mischief. "Trust me. You'll forget about the time once we get there."

She couldn't help but smile at his confidence. The way he said it made her think that maybe, just maybe, this would be something special. So, without another word, they began walking, the quiet of the world around them settling into an easy rhythm. The birds had yet to fully stir, and the only sounds were the soft crunch of their feet against the earth, the distant murmur of the river below, and the occasional rustle of the leaves in the trees.

Erica breathed in deeply, the cool air filling her lungs. I've never been one to appreciate mornings like this. But with Sam... everything's different.

As they made their way through the sleepy town, Erica noticed how transformed everything seemed. The streets that usually felt too familiar now appeared new - calm and untouched, as if time itself had slowed down just for them. There was something about the quietude that made the world feel small and intimate.

Finally, after a short while, they reached the hill, and Erica found herself breathless, not from exertion, but from the sheer beauty of what lay before her. The river stretched out below them, winding lazily through the valley. The hills on either side rose like protective arms, and beyond that, the mountains loomed majestically in the distance. The first rays of sunlight caught the water, making it shimmer like liquid gold.

"Wow," Erica breathed, her voice almost a whisper as she took in the scenery. "This is beautiful."

Sam smiled, the corners of his mouth lifting in a way that made Erica's heart skip. He stepped closer to her, his shoulder brushing against hers, and for a moment, they both simply took it in, side by side.

"I come up here when I need to think," Sam said quietly, his voice almost blending with the wind. "Thought you might like it."

Erica nodded, a soft smile playing on her lips. It was hard not to feel at peace in a place like this. The world, as far as the eye could see, seemed to hold its breath in reverence to the moment.

They sat down on the grass, leaning back against the cool earth, both of them content in the stillness. For a while, neither of them spoke. There was no need for words; the quiet comfort of their presence together was enough. But even in the silence, Erica couldn't shake the feeling that something was shifting. Something was different today, something deeper.

After a long stretch of time, Sam shifted beside her, his body moving ever so slightly closer. He turned his head to look at her, and for the first time that morning, Erica noticed the rawness in his eyes. There was something vulnerable about the way he looked at her now. It sent a shiver down her spine, but instead of pulling away, she found herself leaning into it.

"Erica," Sam began, his voice low and steady, but his words hanging in the air, like they had been waiting for the right moment to be spoken. "I love you."

Erica froze. The world seemed to stop for a heartbeat as her brain scrambled to process the words. Did he just say that? Her heart skipped a beat, then another, as she tried to grasp the magnitude of what he had just told her.

"What?" she asked, her voice shaky, the question barely escaping her lips. She wasn't sure if she had heard him correctly.

Sam didn't meet her gaze immediately. Instead, his eyes were fixed on the river, his fingers absently pulling at the grass. His voice was quieter when he spoke again, as if he were afraid the moment would slip away if he said too much.

"I love you," he repeated, the words sounding more certain this time, but still full of a quiet vulnerability. "And I hope you don't leave me."

Erica's heart pounded in her chest, the flutter in her stomach intensifying. She didn't know what to say. She wasn't sure if she was ready for this. Was she ready to admit that she had been feeling the same way? That, despite all the uncertainty, despite the walls they both had put up, she had slowly started to fall for him too?

I can't deny it. I like him. I like him more than I thought I did. The thought made her head spin, and yet, in a way, it felt so right.

What if I'm not ready for this? What if this changes everything? Erica's chest tightened, but she couldn't push the feelings away. She wasn't sure of her own heart, but one thing was for sure: she couldn't imagine her life without him in it.

"Sam..." she said softly, her voice barely more than a whisper. She looked at him, trying to find the right words, trying to make sense of everything inside her. "I... I'm not going anywhere," she finally managed to say. "I promise."

The relief that passed over his face was palpable. His entire body seemed to relax, and his gaze softened in a way that made Erica's heart ache. He reached for her hand, his fingers warm and steady as he squeezed it gently.

"Good," he murmured, his voice thick with something deeper than just relief. "I'm glad."

They sat there for a while, in comfortable silence, the weight of the moment settling between them like a promise. It was scary, but it felt like something was beginning. Something new.

Finally, Sam stood, offering his hand to Erica. She took it, letting him pull her up. The light of the morning had fully touched the world around them now, and as they made their way back down the hill, everything seemed to have shifted. The air felt lighter, full of possibility.

"We should probably head back before Aunt Nena wonders where we've gone off to," Sam said, his voice returning to its usual calm tone, but there was something warmer behind his words.

Erica smiled, nodding as she followed him. As they walked back to Aunt Nena's house, everything felt different. The air was charged with a new energy neither of them could deny.

Sam cleared his throat as they entered the house, where Aunt Nena was sitting at the table, busy with her knitting.

"I'm heading to the city today," Sam said casually, though Erica noticed the way his voice tightened just a fraction. "I need to fix my motorbike."

Aunt Nena looked up, her eyebrows raised. "Are you going alone? You sure you'll be okay?"

"I'll be fine," Sam replied, his tone reassuring. "I won't be gone long."

Erica couldn't shake the feeling of unease in her chest. Sam is going to the city... without me.

"I'll go to the urban area too," Erica said, her voice steady but betraying a hint of uncertainty. "I need to check out some schools, maybe find a place to enroll."

Sam gave her a knowing look, his lips curving up just slightly. He knows. He knows I'm not really going for that. But Erica didn't back down. She wanted to change the subject, wanted to keep the distance between them from feeling like it meant anything more than a quick detour.

He nodded, a small, teasing smile tugging at his lips. "Alright then. I'll see you later."

Erica smiled back, but her heart was heavier now. She watched Sam leave, and once he was gone, she hurried to gather her things. They both had their secrets today, but it was the kind of secret that felt fragile, like something precious between them.

Once the chores were finished, Erica slipped out, making her way toward Solana Wood. The trees stood tall, and as she walked, she felt a sense of calm fall over her. Sam was already waiting when she arrived. Without a word, they walked deeper into the woods, their steps soft, synchronized.

The air grew cooler as they ventured further into the woods, the sounds of nature enveloping them in a comforting embrace. They reached their spot beneath the thick canopy, and as they sat side by side, Erica felt the warmth of Sam's body beside her, a steady presence she never thought she'd need, but now couldn't imagine being without.

"It's nice here," Erica said softly, breaking the silence between them.

Sam leaned in closer, his breath warm against her ear. "Yeah... it's our spot," he murmured, "Our secret spot."

Erica smiled, her heart easing into a peaceful rhythm, the uncertainty of the world outside forgotten. I don't know where this is going, but... I'm okay with it.
