The story is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly sometime during the eighteenth century) and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him.
The story is set up as the narrator's explanation for why a "draught of cool air" is the most detestable thing to him. The tale opens up in the spring of 1923 with the narrator looking for housing in New York City, finally settling in a converted brownstone on West Fourteenth Street. Eventually, a chemical leak from the floor above reveals that the inhabitant directly overhead is a strange, old, reclusive doctor. One day the narrator suffers a heart attack, and remembering that a doctor lives directly above, heads there, culminating in his first meeting with Dr. Muñoz
A man, dazed and confused, wakes up in the middle of the woods strapped in to the drivers seat of a crashed car. With no memory of who he is or where he is, the man ventures deep into the moonlit woods to find answers that may be better left undiscovered...
The narrator visits his strange friend in San Francisco. They have dinner up in the tower within the house. As they are eating, there is a knocking on the wall that disturbs the narrator. The friend tells him to explore it. They discover there is only the outside behind the wall from which he had heard the sound. The friend explains that he has heard this knocking before and that he was happy the narrator also witnessed it.
A young girl has an imaginary friend or is it the other way around?
