"I don't need this baby. You can do whatever you want with him," Stella said coldly. Her sister, Helen was stunned. While she had always known that Stella was irresponsible, she did not expect those words to come from her.
"But Simon is your own flesh and blood. How can you do this to him?" Helen asked, shocked.
"Are you deaf?" Stella shouted. "I don't need him. Besides, I have my career to build. I am made to be a star. I am not made to clean up after someone's drool. You can have him if you want to, since you're unable to have children. You can even give him to his father." Those words cut Helen like a sword, as it reminded her of how her previous relationship ended in a breakup. With a look of malice, Stella turned and left. Helen knew who she was referring to. It was Stella's ex-boyfriend Henry. They had dated previously but broke up as Stella cheated on Henry with another guy. Shortly after their breakup, Stella realized she was pregnant. She had gone to the nearest clinic, intending to get rid of the baby. However, the doctor told her that due to her physical condition, it would be hard for her to get pregnant should she insist on getting rid of the baby. Hence, Stella had no choice but to carry the baby to full term. Now that Simon was born, Stella could not wait to be rid of him. As Helen watched Stella leave the hospital, she felt disgusted by Stella's cruelty, and at the same time, she felt sorry for Simon.
Left with no choice, Helen contacted Henry. He was astounded to learn about the existence of his son, as he did not know Stella had been pregnant. Helen told him everything thathad happened. Like Helen, Henry was disgusted by Stella's cruelty. A paternity test confirmed Henry to be Simon's biological father. Having established his paternity, Henry not only welcomed baby Simon into his life, but he also worked hand in hand with Helen into raising him.
A year had passed. During this time, Simon had started saying his first words and taking his first steps. At the same time, Henry and Helen developed feelings for each other. During one of their dinners together, Henry proposed to Helen, and she agreed. They got married shortly after. Their happiness knew no bounds when Helen found out she was pregnant. 8 months later, a baby girl was born, whom they named Ellie. This was a joyous occasion for the Law family, especially for Simon, who had wanted to have a sibling.
20 years had passed by. By then, Simon had graduated from the army and was starting university with Ellie. The Law family decided to have a family meal to celebrate this occasion. Simon was helping Henry prepare food while Ellie was helping Helen lay the table. Just then, there was a knock on the door. "Let me get the door," Helen said, and went the door. However, her face fell when she opened the door and saw Stella at the doorstep. Helen felt as if a red veil had descended upon her.
"What are you doing here?" she asked irritably.
"What's with that attitude of yours?" Stella said nonchalantly. "I came back after 20 years of absence. Aren't you happy for me?" Before Helen could say anything, Stella pushed past her and entered the house. Just then, Henry exited the kitchen. Upon seeing Stella, his eyes widened in shock. "What...what are you doing here? What do you want from us?"
"I've come to see my son," Stella said."I know he is starting university, and I, as his mother, want to take a look at him." Both Henry and Helen were taken aback by Stella's shamelessness.
"Who do you think you are?" Helen shouted. "You abandoned Simon back then like he was some kind of object, and now he has a promising future, you want to come back like nothing happened. What were you thinking?"
"That's right," Henry added angrily. "From the day you choose to abandon Simon for your own career, you have already lost your right to be called a mother."
"That's none of your business, Henry Law Wing-hang and Helen Lam Ngan-yuk," Stella snapped. "I gave birth to Simon and this is a fact that cannot be changed. You can't stop me from seeing him." Before Henry and Helen could say anything in retaliation, Simon appeared. "Simon, son, take your sister and...," Helen began, but Henry shook his head. "What is meant to happen, will happen," he whispered. "Let our son make his decision."
"Simon, my son. I'm your mother," Stella said. Simon revealed that he had known about his parentage since young. "I have been thinking of what to say to you what I see you," he said in a low, emotionless tone. He then turned to Stella and continued, "Now I know what to say. Thank you. If you had kept me with you back then, I wouldn't know where I would've been. Definitely not waiting to start university. Because you never believed in me."
"That's right," Stella raised her voice and said. "You wouldn't have gotten into university if I hadn't abandoned you. So now it's time to repay me."
"Are you kidding me?" Simon snorted with disgust. "I got into university thanks to Dad and Mom and their unwavering support. I wasn't referring to you, though."
"But...that's notfair," Stella protested.
"You abandoned me just because I'm not part of your plan. Which one of us is being unfair?" Simon retorted. "You're lucky my parents raised me well, and I didn't throw you out of the house with a mop. Now get lost, I didn't want to see you again."
"You heard Simon," Helen said in anger. "Get out of here before we call the cops on you." However, Stella refused to budge. "You won't leave? No?" Helen questioned. She then turned to Ellie and said, "Ellie, daughter, go get the mop from the bathroom."
"Yes, Mom," Ellie replied. Stella pointed at the Law family in anger. "Okay, you won," she nodded and said angrily, and stormed out of the house. "Yes, go back to where you belong," Henry snorted, and closed the door. Behind closed doors, Simon told Helen that she will always be his real mother, no matter what others may say. With that, the Law family got ready for dinner, putting the matter behind them as if it were a nightmare.
"But Simon is your own flesh and blood. How can you do this to him?" Helen asked, shocked.
"Are you deaf?" Stella shouted. "I don't need him. Besides, I have my career to build. I am made to be a star. I am not made to clean up after someone's drool.
