Malcolm had been unsuccessfully trying to find a job for almost a year. Being down on his luck, he faced numerous obstacles when looking for a job, such that despite having sent in numerous job applications, he would not hear back from potential employers. Even if he were shortlisted for job interviews, he would be told that he did not have the necessary skills. As such, he had to look for part-time jobs, where the requirements were not as high. He managed to get a job as a part-time cashier at a cafe.
One stormy night, Malcolm was at home, contemplating his future. He had just been retrenched from the cafe he was working at, as he was told that due to workplace restructuring, his services were no longer required. He had only worked at the cafe for 2 months, and had barely enough money to cover his basic expenses. As such, he needed to start finding a job yet again. He gave a sigh as he sent in a job application and was about to retire to bed when he heard someone knock on the door. He opened the door and saw an old lady stand outside. She was soaked to the skin. Feeling sorry for her, Malcolm let her in. Despite not having much food ingredients in the house, he served her hot broth.
"I'm sorry if the food is not much, but that is all I can spare," Malcolm said apologetically. He then poured forth his difficulties in securing a job. The old lady nodded, and encouraged him not to give up hope in his job search. After the meal, he gave her a change of clothes and use of his bedroom, while he slept on the couch.
The next morning, the storm had stopped and the weatherbecame sunny. The old lady was, however, nowhere to be seen. Just then, Malcolm received a call, asking him to attend a interview for the job he applied the day before. Despite his misgivings, he decided to give it a try. The hiring manager looked at his resume and frowned, which made Malcolm believe he did not get the job. Just then, a voice rang out. "He can be hired on the spot." Malcolm turned was surprised to see that the CEO of the company was none other than the old lady whom he had sheltered the night before. She described how Malcolm had helped her when she was in need, and decided to give him a chance. Because of a simple kind act, Malcolm now found himself with a job, an unexpected stroke of luck which marked a new beginning.
