As her footsteps echoed in the alley, Celeste felt mostly relief: there were no people around. Her pace was steady and calm as she reached the corner, and she turned a sharp right onto Treacle Street. Taking the time to look around as she walked, something caught her eye: a door was ajar, and light was spilling out onto the sidewalk. Immediately, filled with resolve, she started for the house the door belonged to.
Once Celeste reached the door, she peeked inside and saw a young woman with long brown hair, standing in front of a large mirror, cleaning it with a cloth. The woman set the cloth down and proceeded to examine her face. Celeste pushed the door open gently and slipped inside, unnoticed.
The woman carefully poked and prodded at her face, furrowing her brow in between explorations. A sigh spread quietly around the room, reaching Celeste, who was slowly making her way to the end of the room where the woman was standing.
Suddenly, Celeste moved fast---she moved directly behind the girl, hands raised ready to grab her, when suddenly the woman let out a deafening scream?and yet, she was still looking in the mirror.
Confused, Celeste looked up and her eyes met the woman's in the mirror --- her terrified face --- but then her eyes slid up a couple of inches and met?another pair? Another pair attached to a face, and to a body she had never seen before, but which was standing directly in her place.
She dropped her hands and so did her reflection.
"What?" she whispered breathily, suddenly unaware of the woman who had stopped screaming and was now curiously observing Celeste.
Celeste stepped around the woman and stood in front of the mirror. Her face was unreadable, but her right hand reached up and touched the mirror's surface and traced a few curves, watching her reflected hand follow along. Then, using the same hand, she clumsily poked and prodded at her face, watching it distort as she pushed her eyebrow up, and her nose to the left.
Upon seeing this, the woman let out a giggle, startling Celeste out of her trance.
