Edwin and his wife, Ruby were struggling to cope with the loss of their elder son Mason. He had been attacked by bees after having disturbed a beehive, and had been in a state of shock. When he was subsequently declared brain dead, Edwin and Ruby decided to donate his organs. Their source of comfort was their younger son Mich. Although he was diagnosed with autism, Edwin and Ruby did not mind, as taking care of him enabled them to get over Mason's death more easily.
A few years had passed since Mason's death. One day, Edwin and Ruby were bringing Mich out when they saw a young boy on the streets. When he saw them, he ran up to them, and called Edwin and Ruby "Daddy" and "Mummy" respectively. Even though they had never seen the boy, Edwin and Ruby found something click inside them. For some reason, Mich said his first words when he saw the boy, which made Edwin and Ruby rejoice. Just then, a lady appeared and took the boy with her. "Matt, there you are. I finally got you. You got the wrong person. They're not your parents," she said, as she held him by his hand. She apologised to Edwin and Ruby, and told them that Matt would often run away from the orphanage, claiming he wanted to look for his parents. As he was being taken back to the orpahnage, Matt looked back at Edwin and Ruby every now and then.
After their encounter with Matt, Edwin and Ruby could not get their minds off him. As such, they would bring Mich to the orphanage to visit him regularly. Mich got along with Matt, and they would interact for hours on end.

His parents passed away during the car crash, leaving him the sole survivor. However, he needed a heart transplant that time. At that time, Edwin and Ruby had donated Mason's organs, and his heart turned out to be a match for Matt's. As such, Mason's heart had been donated to Matt, giving him a second chance at life. After hearing the truth, Edwin and Ruby made a decision to adopt Matt, and he officially became part of their family.
