Alan had just bought a car, which he would use to drop his friend, Horace off to work every day, as Horace's workplace was on his way. Every morning, the car would pass a homeless beggar. Being a kind man, Alan would stop his car at the roadside and give the beggar a few dollars upon seeing him. This act of kindness, however, did not sit well with Horace, who often criticized his kind act.

"Why do you care so much about this man? He's just a homeless beggar. He can't do anything for you," Horace said. "The good that man do finds its way back to them," Alan replied, but there was no convincing of the cynical Horace. He simply scoffed and mocked the beggar.

One morning, Alan was driving his car to work, but this time without giving Horace a ride, as the latter claimed to have something on for the day. On his way to work, he saw the beggar again. As usual, he stopped his car at the roadside and gave the beggar some loose change. However, as he was about to leave, the beggar stopped him.

"I see that you're alone today. Where's your friend?" he asked in a voice barely more than a whisper as he scanned the interior of Alan's car.

"No, he said he had something on today," Alan replied. "Why? What's wrong?"

"Good," the beggar whispered again as he passed a folded note to Alan. "Read this when you get to work."

When Alan got to the office, the other staff had yet to arrive, so he opened the note. But he stood rooted on the spot as he read the note. The content of the note was written in Cantonese: "Someone is planning to steal your car and harm you. Don't drive it home today." Alan
could not believe what he had just read. He could not wrap his head around who would want to harm him. Then he remembered the beggar asking him about Horace. "It can't be," Alan thought to himself. Still, he decided to give the beggar the benefit of the doubt, and so, he took the bus back home after work instead of driving.

When Alan reached home, his wife Emily was standing at the doorway. "Dear, you're back. Watch the news broadcast, quick," she said hurriedly. Alan turned on the television, and much to his shock, Horace had been killed, and the police had arrested 2 men. The truth soon unraveled. It turned out that the beggar, whom Alan had always given alms to, had overheard 3 strangers plotting to steal Alan's car and attack him. As they were wearing masks, the beggar did not see their faces. However, among the voices, he recognized the mastermind as Horace. He had hired the 2 men to carry out the deed. When Alan did not appear as planned, the 2 men demanded full payment. Horace refused to pay, and an argument broke out. During the argument, the 2 men shot him dead using a gun silencer. 2 passers-by, who witnessed the shooting, secretly called the police, who apprehended the 2 men as they were about to dispose of Horace's body. Alan was horrified that Horace, whom he had considered his friend, would want to do such a thing to him, but was grateful to the beggar for saving his life.

The next morning, Alan and Emily were walking to the bus stop, intending to catch a bus to the shopping center when they saw the beggar. This time though, Alan asked the beggar to follow them. "Thank you for saving my life. I would like
to offer you a job with my company as a token of appreciation. What do you think?" he asked. Hearing this, the beggar, whose name is Lance, readily agreed. "Great, you can start tomorrow. And as for your place of stay, the company does provide accommodation," Alan said. He and Emily brought Lance to the shopping center and bought him new clothes and gave him a makeover. Lance settled in his new job and new life with both Alan and Emily's help, putting his life on the streets behind for good.
