"I'm sorry, Mr. Law, but we've tried our best," the doctors addressed Donny uniformly. Upon hearing those dreaded words, Donny's mind turned blank. His grandmother Charlotte suffered a brain hemorrhage, and despite the doctors' best efforts, she could not be saved. "How could that be?" Donny muttered to himself. "She's still alive a few hours ago..." He rushed into the operating theater and saw Charlotte lay on the operating theater, lifeless. Tears flowed freely down his cheeks.
"I'm sorry for your loss, Mr. Law," a junior nurse named Susan Au addressed him. "Had Madam Ching been around..." Suddenly, she realized her slip, and kept quiet. Donny felt a sense of emptiness inside him when it dawned upon him that his grandmother Charlotte, who had raised him since the death of his parents, had passed away. Even though Susan had not finished her sentence, he knew what she was talking about. Susan was referring to his wife, Martha Ching, the hospital's most renowned neurosurgeon. Had she operated on Charlotte, the latter might have still been alive. Even though Martha had the necessary skills and expertise, she refused to operate on Charlotte, claiming that she had to accompany her male friend, Luke, as it was his father's death anniversary. At this moment, his mind was filled with grief mixed with anger.
Donny's mind was transported back to a few hours prior, when Charlotte suddenly suffered a brain hemorrhage. He immediately contacted Martha, hoping she would save Charlotte on account of how the latter treated her like her own granddaughter. However, Martha simply brushed him off and said, "Don't you know something happened to Luke? He needed me the most, so I have to accompany him." Before Donny could say another word, Martha had hung up the phone. Donny drove to Luke's house, where therewere a lot of people gathered for Luke's father's death anniversary. They were whispering among themselves. Donny was blushing with embarrassment, but as he thought of Charlotte, whose life was hanging by a thread, he disregarded all gossip. He held on to Martha's hand, begging her to save Charlotte's life. "I can give you anything you want. I can even grant you a divorce if you want to," begged Donny. By then, it was evident that Martha had never loved Donny, but merely regarded him as nothing more than a replacement as compared to Luke. However, Martha was clearly outraged due to the embarrassment caused. She flung his hand away in disgust and shouted, "Today is Luke's father's death anniversary. Why are you making a scene? And what's the big deal about your grandmother? She's already so old. She can die for all I care. Even if I'm not around, there are other doctors that can operate on her, aren't there?" With that, she ignored Donny and helped Luke with the preparations for his father's death anniversary. Donny stumbled to the hospital. Due to Martha'a refusal to operate on Charlotte, the operation was a failure, and Charlotte passed away. Knowing that Martha was responsible for Charlotte's death, Susan did not know what to say. She could only watch as Donny left the operating theater with a heavy heart.
Donny drove home. There was heavy traffic, and the road was lined with vehicles. As Donny took out his mobile phone while waiting for the traffic to be mobile, he saw Luke's post on FaceBook. In the post, Martha was dressed in funeral attire and helping Luke out. Donny seethed in anger when seeing the post. He called Martha repeatedly, but there was no answer. Just as he was about to give up,Martha answered the call. "What do you want now? I told you so many times, I was busy," she answered irritably. Donny scoffed at those words. "Martha Ching, you won. Granny passed away. Are you happy with this scenario? My grandmother, whom you always regarded as a thorn in your flesh, passed away because of you. Why didn't you die instead?" Donny shouted over the phone, with tears in his eyes. His words stunned Martha, but very quickly, she reacted. She accused Donny of making up Charlotte's death because he was jealous of Luke. "Furthermore, your grandmother died. What's the big deal? It's even better this way, I would say." Donny felt as if a red veil had descended upon him. "Martha, don't you feel any remorse? You're talking about my grandmother, who had always doted on you." Suddenly, Luke's voice could be heard over the phone. "Martha is very busy now. If there's anything, you can talk to me," he said with a mocking tone. Donny felt so disgusted that he hung up the phone. He could not understand why Martha would choose to prioritise Luke's father's death anniversary over Charlotte's life, especially when Luke's father had passed away many years ago. Furthermore, when Charlotte was still alive, she had always treated Martha like her own granddaughter. She would ask Donny to treat Martha nicely, even though the latter had always picked on her. As such, Donny would always put up with Martha whenever she helped Luke under the guise of helping a friend. However, he could not forgive her for Charlotte's death.
Donny decided to hold a funeral for Charlotte. As he collected her remains, he could not control his grief. He knelt down and cried. Just then, he received a message from Luke, which showed Martha laying byhis side. In Luke's message, he bragged about how Martha had always prioritised him over Donny, and even mocked the latter for being all alone. Martha did not turn up for Charlotte's funeral. Instead, doctors and nurses from the hospital Martha worked at turned up, with Susan being among the attendees. She looked at him with pity.
"Where's Martha? Is she busy with some operation? Why is she not present at such an important occasion?" asked the principal doctor. "She doesn't have to come," Donny replied coldly. "We've already divorced." His reply stunned the medical staff at the funeral, as they knew about Donny's unrequited love towards Martha. The principal doctor patted Donny on his shoulder, expressing his condolence. "Martha has been really busy these past few days. Let me give her a few days of leave to settle family matters," he said. "That's not necessary," Donny interrupted him coldly. He then stood up and confronted them about their knowledge of Martha's illicit relationship with Luke under the guise of friendship, as well as Charlotte's death due to Martha's refusal to operate on her. "Since you already knew about it, why do you still want to cover up for her?" Donny continued in a voice mixed with grief and coldness. Everyone suddenly fell silent. Susan opened her mouth, as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she just offered prayers to Charlotte. Even after the guests had left, Martha still did not turn up. Donny knew that she was consoling Luke, as she was feeling sorry for him for having lost his father at a young age.
Donny went back home after the funeral had ended. He entered the living room, which was designed according to Martha's taste. He immediately packed her belongings and called her. Whenshe picked up, her voice was tinged with lethargy.
"I've already packed all your belongings. Let's get a divorce," Donny said expressionlessly. Martha remained unfazed. "That's enough, Donny Law," she shouted. "Haven't you gone too far just to seek my attention? I'm telling you, you'll be very sorry if you continue this act." However, Donny scoffed at her words. Martha spluttered vulgarities at Donny before hanging up the phone.
The next day, Donny contacted moving services, delivering all of Martha's belongings to Luke's residence. He then sat on the sofa, reminiscing about his past with Martha. They had gotten together 2 years after Martha broke up with Luke. At that time, Martha desperately wanted to get married due to her parents' insistence, while Donny liked Martha even when the latter was with Luke. When he learnt that Martha had chosen to marry him, Donny was excited. However, after the wedding ceremony, Martha placed Luke's photo in the bedroom, saying that she did not love Donny, and her marriage with him was nothing more than a formality. Her words cut Donny like a sword, but he put up with it due to his love towards Martha and treated her parents nicely. He even put up with her mistreatment towards him and Charlotte. As he looked at the place he once called home, he mocked at himself for being hopelessly devoted to Martha.
Donny's thoughts were interrupted by the arrival of the property agent. He handed over the keys to the unit. No sooner had he sold the house than he received a call from Martha. Her voice was laced with anger.
"Donny Law, what is that supposed to mean? Why did you sell the house? This is also my house. You have no right to sell it without my permission. And my belongings, why didyou send them to Luke's house?" she shouted. Donny took a deep breath and said, "Martha, I already told you we're getting a divorce. Do you think I'm joking? You liked Luke, didn't you? I'll step aside so that you two can be happy." Martha raised her voice, demanding to know where Donny was. When they met, Donny showed her divorce papers. Martha threw a fit and hurled accusations at him. However, she was stunned when she saw Charlotte's photo in black frame. She tried to downplay her role in Charlotte's death, but Donny was unmoved. He questioned her ethics as a doctor. Martha could not refute his accusations, and started crying, downplaying her illicit relationship with Luke. However, Donny did not believe her and threw her out of the house along with the divorce papers. "Meet me at the law firm tomorrow. We'll sign the divorce papers," he said coldly.
The next day, Donny went to the law firm, where Martha was present. They went towards the office of the lawyer who specialized in divorce cases. Outside the divorce lawyer's office, Martha tried to get Donny to change his mind, but he stood his ground, intent on getting a divorce. Suddenly, she charged into the office and threatened to commit suicide should the lawyer take on Donny's case. Donny remained unfazed. Pointing to the window, he said, "Go ahead and jump. I've checked. Falling from this height would not be sufficient to cause death. It would at most cause you to become disabled. You've got Luke, didn't you? Your love is so strong. I'm sure he won't mind your disability." The lawyer was drafting the divorce contract. He had consulted the lawyer before his meeting with Martha, and found out that due to Martha's acts, the odds were in hisfavour. Feeling neglected, Martha screamed and climbed up the window. Despite knowing that she was merely trying to threaten him, Donny called Luke, who heard Martha's screaming words. Within 10 minutes, he arrived. With a face that was blacker than black, he dragged Martha out of the lawyer's office, but collided with a group of reporters whom Donny had hired. The reporters, who had heard about what Martha had done, surrounded her and Luke and took photos of them. This angered Luke, who snatched the camera of one of the reporters and revealed his ugly side.
"Don't you have anything better to do than harrass 2 commoners?" he shouted. The reporters, who came prepared, questioned both Luke and Martha's involvement in Charlotte's death. Martha's face turned pale. By that time, a large crowd had gathered. They pointed fingers at her. Martha could only fall into Luke's arms, while Donny watched in satisfaction. The lawyer, who had finished drafting the divorce contract, suddenly approached him and whispered into his ears. Donny approached Martha, which made her eyes light up. She changed her tune and claimed that on the day of Charlotte's death, she had something on. Donny suddenly played a recording, which showed Martha mocking Charlotte's death. He had recorded his entire phone conversation with her. Donny then poured out his grievances, which made Martha shudder. She slumped on the ground. Luke held her hand and stared at Donny, accusing him of falsifying the recording. Emboldened, Martha joined Luke in refuting Donny's accusations. The crowd looked at Donny with disbelief, with a few people shaking their heads.
Suddenly, Susan appeared in the crowd. "I can prove that Mr. Law is telling the truth," she said, with tears in her eyes. "I was there when Mr. Law's grandmother died. I can prove that DoctorChing was scheduled to work." Susan pointed at Luke and continued, "It was this man, he appeared and took Doctor Ching away. About Doctor Ching's relationship with him, it was known among the hospital staff. You can ask anyone. Should there be any falsehood, I'm willing to take full responsibility." Donny looked at Susan with admiration. Martha's defences began to crumble. As the reporters started recording videos, Martha suddenly advanced towards Susan menacingly. "Susan Au, did Donny Law pay you to make such accusations against me? Or have the two of you been having an affair all along?" she shouted. This was the last straw for Donny. He stood in front of Susan, protecting her and shouted, "That's enough, Martha Ching." Martha was visibly stunned. As she kept hurling accusations at both Donny and Susan, Donny suddenly had an idea. He deliberately hugged Susan tightly and said, "We're just friends. Besides, what she was saying was the truth. Do you think I can still live with you after you caused Granny's death? You, who were having a lover, had the nerve to accuse me of having an affair. Have you no shame?" Donny's words cut Martha like a sword, while Luke's face turned red. Donny whispered in his ear, "How do you think Martha will react if she finds out why you left her back then?" Luke's face turned pale. He forcibly dragged Martha out of the office, with the latter turning back to look at Donny. The crowd slowly dispersed. As Susan was leaving, Donny stopped her and asked her to help him, promising to pay her. She looked at him with confusion, while he smiled at her. After a while, she understood where Donny was coming from. Feeling sorry for his predicament and at the same time, wantingto teach Martha a lesson, Susan agreed to help him. However, she refused to accept payment. "Granny mentioned you at her deathbed," she whispered to herself. "She was concerned about your happiness. I just wanted her to leave in peace." Susan's words made Donny think about Charlotte again. He thought about everything she did for him, none of which was what Martha had done for him. As he thought about how she had a hand in Charlotte's death, Donny resolved to make Martha live in regret for the rest of her life.
After that day, the video of Martha and Luke went viral, and they became the talk of the town. Martha rented a unit next to Donny's and harrassed him repeatedly. After Susan learnt the facts from Donny, she went to his residence with a bag of groceries and behaved intimately with him, which angered Martha. She banged on the doors repeatedly and demanded an explanation. "Donny Law, what is that supposed to mean? Don't you know we're still married?" she asked angrily. Susan opened the door and invited her in, saying that they needed to have a serious conversation.
"When will you divorce Donny?" Susan threw the question at Martha. "You know I have liked him all along, and I would like to date him. What you choose to regard as a noose around your neck, someone else will come along and regard what you didn't want, as a goldmine." Martha was stunned to hear those words from Susan, whom she had always looked down at work. "Sorry, Madam Ching, but I am currently pursuing Donny. The problem now is he is still married, so I hope you know what I'm saying." Martha became hysterical upon hearing those words. She raised her hand to strike, but was stopped byDonny. "That's enough," he shouted. "What do you think you're doing? Like I said, Miss Au and I are just friends. I haven't agree to date her. She just wanted to keep me company because I was feeling low due to Granny's death. Nothing happened between us. Why are you making a scene?" Martha slumped to the ground, defeated. She tried to get Donny to change his mind about getting a divorce, claiming that she would cease all contact with Luke. Donny remained unmoved, reiterating his decision to divorce her. Martha cried hysterically, refusing to accept his decision to get a divorce. Donny bent down and whispered into her ear menacingly, "Don't you remember? You begged me to let you go. You said you loved Luke and had been waiting for him, and our marriage was nothing more than a formality. You expect me to treat your parents nicely, but have you ever treated my grandmother nicely? Not at all. In fact, in order to be with Luke, you refused to operate on her. You caused her death. Do you really think Luke was forced to leave you back then? Let me tell you. He left you for another woman, whom he subsequently married. However, they are now facing financial issues, so Luke decided to cheat you. He's been taking you for a ride, you fool." With that, he threw a stack of photos on the ground, which contained evidence of his findings. Those photos completely crushed Martha's love towards Luke, and she suddenly laughed like a maniac. "I've always thought I won, but what a fool I've been to lose my loving husband over some scum." She got up and left dejectedly. Donny once again asked her to sign the divorce papers. "Since you already knew everything, sign thedivorce papers. I want nothing more to do with you." Seeing that Donny was intent on divorcing her, Martha took the pen with a listless look in her eyes and signed the divorce papers. For the next few days, he saw Martha loiter around the estate. From her appearance, it seemed like the days had not been kind to her. However, Donny ignored her, and carried on with his life.
One day, Donny received a call from Martha, saying that she had kidnapped Luke and Susan. When he rushed to the scene, Martha was raining punches on Luke. "Why did you lie to me? Why? Why bother coming back when you've already left? I have thought of living a peaceful life with Donny," she screamed hysterically. Donny retreated upon seeing Martha's acts, fearing for Susan's safety. Martha seemed to have read his mind. She smiled and started stangling Susan. She forced Donny to choose between her and Susan. As Susan struggled, Donny was reminded of Charlotte's death. He urged Martha not to continue her wrongdoings. "It's my fault. Just let her go. Why didn't you allow anyone else to love me when you don't have feelings for me?" he questioned. His last statement seemed to have jabbed a dagger into Martha's heart. She released her grip on Susan. She then took out a small knife and charged towards Luke. Before Donny could stop her, Martha had already stabbed Luke. He was left paralysed. The situation was progressing beyond Donny's control. While Martha was not looking, he immediately freed Susan and whispered, "Quick, run away while you still can. This is between me and Martha." However, Susan held on to Donny's hand firmly, in a determination no words could describe. At that moment, Donny felt true love descend upon him. Martha chargedat them, holding a bloodied knife in her hand, while muttering that she loved Donny. He retreated, while Susan stood behind him with fear in her eyes, but refused to run away. Donny was determined to protect her from Martha at all costs. Just as he was expecting the worst, police officers arrived. After a brief standoff, Martha leapt off the parapet, where she was fortunately saved by paramedics. Luke was left bedridden after the incident, while Martha was arrested and institutionalised in a mental hospital. Donny put his arms around Susan. "It's okay, everything is fine now," he comforted her. After everything was over, Donny started a relationship with Susan, this time for real. He was certain that Charlotte would be watching over them from heaven, giving them her blessings.
