**continued from the short story The last house**
Taylor and I decided to visit the house that evening as planned. But before that, we planned on having dinner and watching a movie first.
The movie was scary. It was about a group of 3 students who visited the last house on the street in the middle of the night after hearing rumors that the house was haunted. Although they had heard that whoever entered the house were never seen alive, the students were undeterred. However, after they were seen walking in the direction of the house, they mysteriously disappeared. No one had seen them alive since then, and as of today, the case remained unsolved.
When we were on the shuttle bus enroute to the house, everyone suddenly became quiet. "I hope we won't end up like the students in the movie," Taylor whispered. "Taylor Yeung," I addressed her firmly. "It was you who wanted to accompany me to find out the secret of the loud cries inside the house. You're not backing out at this juncture, are you?" Suddenly, we saw 2 secondary school male students, who were seated in front of us, turn around and look at us.
"You're talking about the last house on the run-down street, right?" one of the boys asked. I nodded. "My brother and I were returning home from school a few days ago. It was in the late evening and we decided to take a shortcut. The street was quite run-down and there were no one else, which made us feel a bit scared. We heard loud cries coming from inside the house."
"Yes, it was so scary," added his brother. "We wanted to go inside and check, when we saw a man loiter suspiciously. He is a Chinese man in his 30s, but wecan't see his face clearly as he was wearing a cap, which was pulled down. We hid ourselves to avoid being seen. After a while, we saw the man meeting another man, who looked like he was in his 40s, but we don't know who he was. We were a distance from them, so we didn't know what they were talking about. We were scared someone might see us, so when the men left together, we ran home quickly."
As Taylor and I listened in on the conversation, we suddenly remembered seeing a poster of a wanted man. According to the description, the man was a Chinese man in his 30s. "Maybe that's why he pulls his cap down?" I wondered aloud.
After a few stops, the 2 male students alighted. There was only me and Taylor left on the bus. When we reached our stop, we climbed out and stood by the roadside. As the bus left, I could see the driver look at us, as if to say "I have a feeling that something bad is going to happen."
We walked to the last house on the street and knocked on the main door a few times, but no one answered the door, so I pushed open the door. The living room floor was clean, which was a stark contrast to claims that no one had lived there for ages.
Suddenly, we heard noises. "Quick, hide," I said softly. We hid behind the nearest cupboard, and saw 2 men enter the living room. We recognised one of the men as the man on the run, but neither of us recognised the other man, who looked like he was in his 40s. For some reason, I decided to turn on the video recorder function on my mobile phone. From our hiding place, weheard that both men were wanted by authorities. It turned out that they had killed the family of 4, who were reported missing 15 years ago. The father had refused to do business with them as he knew they were involved in shady dealings. Because of that, the men planned to kill him. The call which the father received when the family was seen leaving hurriedly was nothing more than a ploy by the 2 men to lure him to a spot where he could be easily attacked. As for the mother and 2 children, they were killed as they happened to be there. The loud cries for help were merely a recording playing from a voice recorder, to make people believe the house was haunted, as the men were hiding in the vicinity.
"Looks like we need to get help," Taylor whispered. Fortunately, the men went out after a while, giving us a chance to flee the house. We ran as fast as our legs could carry us. When we reached the main road, we saw a taxi. We flagged down the taxi, and asked the taxi driver to bring us to the police station. The driver agreed.
At the police station, Taylor and I told the police everything, and I showed them the video recording on my mobile phone. With the evidence Taylor and I provided, the 2 fugitives were apprehended. A few days later, Taylor and I were commended by the police for having helped nab the fugitives. We were glad that the case of the last house has been closed.
