It was the start of a working day, and the office building was bustling with activity. A man in crutches stepped into an elevator which was already crowded. Moments later, a lady named Annisa entered the lift behind him. The elevator refused to move as it was overloaded. Annisa turned sharply to the man, looked at him from head to toe and crossed her arms.
"I think the elevator is trying to say that you don't belong here," Annisa smirked. "Please step out so that we can take the elevator."
"But you were the last person to enter," the man said quietly, but Annisa could not care less.
"I don't have time for this," she said in a sharp tone and pointed at the man. "I have an important interview and I'm running late." She then shoved the man out. Another lady named Claudia could not stand Annisa's arrogant behavior, and broke the silence.
"Hey, that's enough," Claudia said angrily. "He needed the lift too, and this is what you did to him?" Annisa just smirked and made a face. Claudia exited the lift and comforted the man. "Don't mind her. I'll wait for the next lift with you." Seeing that both Claudia and the man were already out of the lift, Annisa pressed the lift button to close the elevator.
Later, Annisa sat anxiously in the waiting room. When the office reached closing hours, she finally approached the receptionist.
"I've been waiting here since morning," she said. "But no one has attended to me." The receptionist smiled politely and replied, "Oh Ma'am, the interview ended hours ago, and you failed." Hearing this, Annisa became furious.
"Failed?" she snapped. "I don't think you know what you're talking about. I want to see your boss." She then stormed into the boss's office and froze. Sitting behind the desk was none other than the disabled man from the elevator. He looked up calmly and said, "Hello, I already interviewed you at the elevator."
"I...how am I supposed to know you're the boss?" she stammered.
"You see, actions can sometimes be forgiven, but their consequences cannot. People who treat others like trash have no place in my company. I have already made my decision, and the job goes to Claudia Yeung Wai-ling." The boss paused for a while then continued, "As for you, Annisa Choi Bo-yee, a word of advice, learn how to be a human first before you work." Annisa left the boss's office in shame, knowing that she had lost her golden opportunity.
