"I'm sorry, my son, but only one of us can survive," Sophie whispered tearfully as she threw her baby son, Vince out of the window.
Sophie's husband, Anson had no love for Vince since the day he was born. While she welcomed the baby with open arms, his attitude was that of indifference. He would often made snide remarks about Vince's crying, even when Sophie was trying her best to calm the baby down. Not only that, he would criticize her for her postpartum figure.
"This child has ruined your figure. Looking at you makes me want to vomit," Anson remarked.
"What do you mean by 'this child'?" Sophie said angrily. "Anson Ho Sai-cheung, can you hear yourself? You're talking about your own flesh and blood."
"My own flesh and blood?" Anson smirked. "How can I be sure you didn't conceive him by sleeping with other men?" Sophie felt hurt by her husband's meanness, but put up with it out of her love for him and at the same time, she did not want Vince to grow up without a father, since she herself was raised by a single mother and did not know who her father was.
One day, Sophie went to the gym and left baby Vince in Anson's care. However, when she returned, Vince was nowhere to be found. Panicking, she went to Anson, who was watching football.
"Dear, Vince disappeared. I can't find him. Call the police," Sophie said, her voice panicky.
"Stop whining," Anson said nonchalantly. "He must be somewhere nearby."
Just then, Sophie heard cries coming from the backyard. She went to the backyard, and to her shock, she saw baby Vince in the backyard, lying in a pile of leaves. Sophie put her hand on Vince's forehead. It was as hot as fire. She carried the baby back into the house and confronted Anson, who said that he left baby Vince in the backyard.
"What do you think you're doing?" Sophie asked angrily. "Now he has a fever because of you."
"He was crying. I couldn't watch football in peace because of him," Anson said without a shred of remorse. Hearing this, Sophie was intent on leaving him. She went to her mother Lauren and voiced out her thoughts, but to her shock, Lauren blamed her for trying to deprive Vince of a complete family. As Sophie thought about what she went through growing up in a single-parent family, she relented. Little did she know how wrong she was.
One day, Sophie was collecting dirty clothes for washing after having put Vince to sleep. She stopped by the study and was about to ask Anson whether he had any clothes for washing when she overheard him talking on the phone, and his phone conversation left her horrified. It turned out that Anson had not only been cheating on her, but had also fathered a child with his mistress. They were conspiring to take Vince away when she was not at home, sell him to some human smuggling ring and frame her for his disappearance. "I'm so fed up with both of them," Anson said. "After we get rid of them, I'll move in with you and our unborn child and the three of us can have a happy life together." Sophie's heart sank when she heard those words. While she knew that Anson hated baby Vince, she did not expect him to be that monstrous. That was when she realized she had to save herself and Vince. Wasting no time, Sophie went to the nursery to get Vince. "Sweetie, come to Mummy," she whispered. Suddenly, Anson appeared at the doorway.
"Where are you going?" he asked in a loud voice.
"Me? I'm just going for a walk," Sophie replied, trying to hide her fear. However, Anson seemed to have read her mind.
"Stop lying, it's almost nighttime," he said and advanced towards her.
"I heard your phone conversation. I know you not only have a lover, but also have a child with her," Sophie said, pointing at him.
"Oh, are you serious? Do you really think I'll let you escape?" Anson asked menacingly.
"I'm begging you. Just let us leave," Sophie pleaded, but to no avail.
"So that you can sue me and leave me with nothing in the divorce? There's no way I'll agree," Anson smirked. Enraged, Sophie picked up a small flower vase. "Take that," she shouted as she hit him on his forehead. When Anson was knocked out, Sophie took baby Vince with her. She had just started the car engine when Anson regained consciousness and shouted expletives at them as he ran after the car. "I'll find you and you'll be very sorry," he threatened.
Sophie and Vince checked into a hotel for the night, and Vince was crying. "It's OK, sweetie. We're safe, for now," Sophie whispered.
The next morning, Sophie woke up to the sound of an approaching car. "Oh no," she gasped as she saw Anson from the window. He saw her. "I told you I'd find you," he said in a menacing tone. Moments later, there was pounding on the door, accompanied by Anson's voice. "Open up," he ordered. Sophie held Vince in her arms, not knowing what to do. Just then, she heard a voice outside the window.
"Hey you, person up there, do you need help?" the voice asked. Sophie looked out the window and saw a man.
"I can hear banging in your room. What's going on in there?" he asked.
"I'm begging you, save my baby, please. I'm begging you," Sophie pleaded.
"Ok, what do I need to do?" the man asked. Suddenly, Sophie came up with a crazy idea. "Catch my baby," she said. And she threw baby Vince out of the window. Fortunately, the man managed to catch the baby, who calmed down almost instantly in his arms, something which had never happened with Anson. "Everything is fine, little one," the man whispered to baby Vince, who smiled.
A moment later, Anson broke into the room, holding a baseball bat. "Did you think you could hide from me?" he asked as he moved menacingly towards Sophie.
"Please don't do this," Sophie pleaded. But Anson was unmoved.
"It's too late," he said. "I've gone too far. You made your choice. Farewell now." He then raised the baseball bat, but before he could strike, the man who saved baby Vince stormed into the room and took control of the baseball bat. It turned out that he was a police officer.
"Don't move," he ordered and looked at Sophie. "Don't worry, Ma'am," he continued. "Help is on the way." Within minutes, police officers arrived and arrested Anson. "I'll get out of jail in no time and you'll be very sorry, got it?" he threatened. Vince's saviour, whose name is Pierre, handed Vince over to Sophie. "Don't worry. It looks like your husband isn't getting out any time soon. We've also arrested his mistress, and she has confessed to being in cahoots with him. But her unborn baby..." Sophie offered to raise the baby as well, citing that the baby was innocent. She also thanked Pierre for saving both her and Vince. "I simply did what I have to do. It's my job," he replied.
Sophie successfully filed for divorce from Anson. She also managed to get custody of baby Clara, Anson's illegitimate daughter with his mistress after her birth, treating both her and Vince equally. By that time, Sophie had developed feelings for Pierre, which was mutual. A year later, they were married, with Vince and Clara's blessings.
