Michael and his wife, Claire had just moved into a new house. They had scrimped and saved for over 5 years before being able to afford their dream house. "Finally," Michael muttered. "We have a home which we can call our own."
After a simple dinner at their new home, the couple decided to retire to bed. At midnight, Michael woke up to strange sounds. "Dear, did you hear those sounds? I think they're coming from the basement," he told Claire, who was trying to fall asleep. "It's nothing much," she replied. "Maybe there are some kids playing at this late hour. Go back to sleep."
The next night, Michael woke up to the same sounds. He woke Claire up, and told her about the same strange sounds which he had heard. They decided to check out the house. However, they did not find anything after checking every corner of the house.
"That's strange," Michael muttered under his breath. "The sounds are definitely coming from here."
"I don't know," Claire shrugged her shoulders and said. "I didn't see anything here either. Maybe it really is just some kids playing in the middle of the night?"
The next night, Michael and Claire decided to check out the basement again, but this time, they did so during their bedtime, when they heard the strange sounds. When they went to the basement, they saw a young girl of about 8 years old stand at the door. She looked drenched. "Help," she whispered in a voice which was barely audible, but still enough for Michael and Claire to hear.
"Is there anything which I can help you with?" Michael asked. However, the girl did not answer his question, and repeated her request "Help me", before disappearing into the night, leaving both Michael and Claire baffled.
"Maybe we can speak to theneighbours who might know something?" Claire suggested. Michael agreed. The next day, they spoke to their new neighbours, Mr and Mrs Cheung. They were told that a few years ago, a girl named Janet Yip was on a boating trip with her parents when an accident happened which claimed the lives of both her parents and she went missing. She was 8 years old then. Mr and Mrs Cheung then showed Michael and Claire a photo of Janet, whom they recognised as the girl whom they saw at the basement. According to Mr and Mrs Cheung, Janet's lifeless body was found floating on the canal a few days after she went missing, which the cause of death was certified as drowning. This revelation that they were seeing a ghost shocked both Michael and Claire to the core. However, for some reason, they felt the urge to go to the canal where Janet's lifeless body was found. There, they found a young boy who was hanging on to dear life at the railings of the canal. Without hesitation, Michael and Claire held the boy by his hands and pulled him out to safety. He was soaked to the skin and was semi-conscious. Still, he managed to cough out water. Michael and Claire immediately brought the boy to the hospital, whereby the doctors examined him and said that he was suffering from pneumonia as he had been in the water for 3 days, and would have died had Michael and Claire found him any later. After regaining consciousness, the boy, whose name is James, revealed that it was his aunt who had done this to him. He was entrusted to his aunt after his parents passed away. However, he was often mistreated. A few days ago, James' aunt suddenly decided to bringhim on a boating trip. Thinking that his aunt had a change of heart, James followed her. The boat sailed away from the shore towards the creek. Suddenly, the boat stopped in the middle of the lake. James' aunt turned around and stared coldly at him. She revealed that she had always considered him a nuisance, and had also staged his parents' deaths to make it look like an accident, as she had bad blood with them. Before James could react, his aunt pushed him off the boat into the water. Fortunately, he was a strong swimmer. He stayed under the water and waited until the boat had sailed far before he swam towards the shore. However, as he was unfamiliar with the place, he soon lost his sense of direction and ended up swimming towards the canal. Unfortunately, having been in the cold water for some time made him weak, and he could only cling on to the railings of the canal in hope that someone would come to his rescue. However, the place was very isolated, and so no one passed by the canal until Michael and Claire came and saved him. It was then that Michael and Claire realised their encounter with Janet's spirit was no coincidence, as it helped them save James' life. With James' testimony, his aunt was swiftly arrested and brought to justice.
After James was discharged from hospital, Michael and Claire prepared the paperwork for his adoption. It was approved, and James became part of their family. A year later, Michael and Claire welcomed a baby daughter, whom they named Janet.
